BMCT 3143 HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

ASSIGNMENT
SEMESTER 2 SESSION 2017/2018

This is a group assignment. The assignment consists of parts A and B with different due dates.
This is PART B of the assignment. Form a group of five (5) people and produce a report on the
description given. The minimum number of students in a group is four (4). The due date of
submission depends on parts. The due date for PART B is 25/04/18.

PART B (5%) LO2, PO11


Do some readings about heat transfer in one (1) of the topics listed below;
1. Heat transfer in technologies related to health treatment.
2. Heat transfer in technologies in food industries.
3. Heat transfer in building.
4. Heat transfer in technologies related to manufacturing processes.
5. Heat transfer cases of human/animal/plants living in an extremely hot areas (desert) and/or
extremely cold areas (Antarctica)
6. Heat transfer phenomena related to dust explosion
7. Condensation and boiling in petroleum industries.
8. Mass transfer in combustion.

Choose only one from the topic listed above. One topic can only be selected by a maximum of two
(2) groups in one class. Your reading should involves at least information from five different
resources. Your report should include the five (5) descriptions listed below:
1. Introduction to the topic.
2. Scientific equations/correlations related to the topic.
3. Identify one very interesting case/device. Describe the case/device. Describe the
importance of the analysis of heat transfer for the device. Describe the heat transfer
processes. Include all necessary equations.
4. Suggest ways to improve heat transfer performance of the selected case/device.
Please cite your references properly. This is a GROUP ASSIGNMENT. You may also include
the flow chart of how work has been distributed amongst group members and how information are
gathered in order to produce good report for this assignment.

Summarize your findings for Parts A and B in two different reports with a maximum of ten (10)
pages each. The first page serves as a cover page. There should be a minimum of five (5) pages of
contents. Figures/Tables should not exceed two (2) pages. Description on the structure of the group
should not take more than a page. The font should be in 12 pt with a 1.5 spacing between
paragraphs.

Marks will be given based on the scientific contents that show the ability of students to understand
the problems. Report your findings using your own words. Zero mark will be given if plagiarism
is detected. Please submit your report to your respective lecturer.
