PREFACE
he need of a guide for beginners of the powerful simulation program ATP-EMTP
T (Alternative Transients Program version of the ElectroMagnetic Transients Program) with
extensive features motivated authors to complete this guide for ATP-EMTP users. The guide has
been developed primarily using existing notes from EEUG courses held in the past. It is also
available in printed form and as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file that can be read and printed using
free Acrobat Reader version 4.

The guide focuses on the ATP versions and supporting programs like ATPDraw and ATP
Control Center running under MS Windows 95/98/NT. It summarizes the modeling features of
the ATP-EMTP, reviews basic solution methods and describes available tools needed to work
efficiently with ATP-EMTP.

The beginners are strongly adviced to refer to the EMTP Theory Book, if they are inexperienced
in the field of computation of electromagnetic transients. The understanding of physical
phenomena, selection of the appropriate model for system components and reasonable model
data are key issues for the success.

This guide is intended to give a general overview about the ATP and the use of the supporting
programs. After becoming acquainted with the operation of the simulation tool ATP-EMTP,
users are advised to refer to the manuals of the separate programs, like ATP Rule Book and
ATPDraw User's Manual, which are the complete reference to the program features and
simulation capabilities. These manuals are available either electronically or on paper via regional
ATP user groups.

The authors will welcome any constructive criticism of this guide and will be grateful if they are
informed of any errata.

The authors wish to thank Dr. W. Scott Meyer for his valuable comments on the review of
solution methods in ATP-EMTP; Drs. Hans-Kristian Høidalen, Massimo Ceraolo and Orlando
Hevia for their contributions about ATPDraw, PlotXY and GTPPLOT, respectively.
