By Ngo Hai Duong

Van Phong, which was formerly known as Port Dayot or Ben Goi in the French
colony, is located in Van Ninh and Ninh Hoa districts and is 50km far from Nha
Trang City. Van Phong boasts diversified terrain which is spotted by islands,
archipelagoes, deep gulfs, beaches, coastlines, and beautiful and charming sand
dunes as well as has diversified ecosystem including tropical forests and salt-
marsh. Under the national tourism development master plan, the Van Phong-Dai
Lanh area is defined one of the national key tourism areas that will be given with
priority in investment in order to foster Vietnam’s national tourism development as
well as local socioeconomic development.

According to assessments by several experts and investment researcher, the Van

Phong-Dai Lanh area is among the most beautiful ecotourism destinations in
Vietnam and in the Southeast Asia thanks to its desolate and waste ecosystem that
is quite rare in the region. It is famous for wide beaches, silky sand, blue and clear
seawater and bordered by willow trees. The Dai Lanh landscape has been named in
the list of Vietnam’s famous beauty spots for many years. In the 17th Minh Mang
Dynasty (1836), the King requested his inferiors to sculpture the Dai Lanh image
on one of nine bronze thuribles set in front of The Temple (The Mieu). In the 6th
Tu Duc Dynasty (1853), Dai Lanh was named in the dictionary. Specifically, in
the Van Phong area, the weather is warm all year long, scenery is special, and the
natural environment is untouched and maintained desolate, which is suitable for
developing into an attractive tourism area in Vietnam and in the world.

After an 18km long road linking the Co Ma Pass with Dam Mon area is put into
operation, tourists will feel easy to travel to Van Phong for swimming, diving,
sightseeing, and visiting island villages such as Dam Mon, Ninh Dao, Khai Luong,
Vinh Yen and Diep Son. Dam Mon is the most beautiful beach with over 30
neglected seaside resorts including Don Dung, Bai Tay, Bai Bua, Bai Nhau and
Bai Lach, etc.

Some travel companies have opened tours to such an attractive landscape like
VillaTour that has two tour programmes to Van Phong. The first is a one-day long
tour which starts at 6:00am and ends at 6:00pm on the same day. Tourists are
picked up at 6:000 at the appointment place to travel to Dam Mon and then go on
board to Van Phong. With an average depth of between 20m and 30m, blue and
clear seawater, the gulf has a series of tendons of underground stones and corals,
which is suitable for diving. After going along the Hon Ong islands, the ship will
stop at Son Dung beach for sightseeing of “Breast Sea”. In the afternoon, tourists
will have a chance to conquer immense sand dunes. Standing at peak of the dunes,
tourists can have an overview of Dam Mon-Van Phong and will be deep in sand
playing.

The second is a two-day, one-night long programme which will bring tourists to
Dai Lanh beach for swimming and sightseeing in the morning of the first day and
then will travel to Dam Mon to have a sightseeing in Van Phong port in the
afternoon. If you stay more, you will have chance to visit beauty spots of Hon Lon,
Hon Do, Ganh Da, fishing villages, lobster breeding sheds, pearl breading area and
enjoy fishing cutterfish in the evening with local fishermen. The most prominent is
enjoying special meals with specialities made from seafood together with rice
alcohol.

Xuan Dung beach is a must to travel to when you coming to Van Phong as it is not
only famous for 11 scattered and nearly isolated households but also soft water
resource inside sand layers. When you sitting on the beach, you can dig a small
hole in the sand, the soft water will appear and become clear in few minutes.
Whenever travel along the beach, local fishermen make full use of their facilities to
contain this soft water and take along to their home for daily life.

On March 11, 2005, prime minister issued the Decision No. 51/2005/QĐ – TTgb
on Van Phong Port economic zone planning by 2020, under which the Van Phong
Port will become an economic complex with an international container warehouse
paying the important role together with multi-sector development including

built in the Bac Van Phong urban areas including a 350-hectare Tuan Le-Hon Nga,
210-hectare Bai Cat Tham, 200-hectare Hon Gom, 40-hectare Dai Lanh. Tourism
