and intensity of otherworldly sufferings is
incomparably greater than worldly pun-
ishments. The natural conclusion of this
point is that the hardships that the believers
endure may seem to be bad but they are
in truth a form of Divine Mercy whereby
Allah absolves the believers from having to
undergo punishment in Hell. This allevia-
tion in punishment is granted only to sinful
believers. The pains and afflictions that dis-
believers experience in this world in no way
mitigates their otherworldly chastisement; a
much more severe and painful chastisement
awaits them in the Hereafter.1
