• Workshop Objectives
– View structural model deformation and axial bar stress for the model
described below.
• Software Version
– Patran 2018.0
– MSC Nastran 2018.0
• Files Required
– None
• Problem Description
– Model a simple frame structure using geometric curves (shown in Figure 1
on the next page) and 1D Bar elements.
• Frame material: Aluminum with E = 10 x 106 psi, n = 0.3
• Density = 2.61 x 10-4 lbf sec2/in4
– Constrain the four corners of the frame using pin restraints
– Loads on frame:
• Engine dead loads, see Figure 2 next page
• Engine operating static load, see Figure 3 next page
• Gravity load, -396.4 in/s2

• Suggested Steps
1. Create a new database and name it frame.
2. Create a frame composed of 18 curves with each curve being 24” in length
as shown in Figure 1 on the previous page.
3. Create a mesh on the curve with global edge length = 12.
4. Equivalence the model nodes to connect elements along surface edges.
5. Create engine dead loads in the –z direction of 150 and 960 applied as
shown in the Figure 2 on the previous page.
6. Create operating engine static load of 100 in both the –x and –y direction
and applied as shown in Figure 3 on previous page.
7. Create gravity load of -386.4
8. Create constraints at the four corners of the frame support.
9. Create an isotropic material for Aluminum with elastic modulus of 10E6 psi,
Poisson’s ratio of 0.3, and density of 2.61E-4.
10.Define the properties of the frame structure:
• Bar Orientation: <0 0 1>
• Area: 10
• Inertia1,1: 40, Inertia2,2: 8
• Torsional Constant: 80

11.Check the load case and verify that the loads and boundary condition are
included.
12.Set up and perform an analysis:
• Solution Type = Linear Static
• Solution Sequence = 101
13.Attach the results file frame.xdb.
14.Plot deformation with scale factor of 0.01.

Steps 1 to 4: Create Frame
Step 1. Create New Database :
a. Create a new data base with File name frame.
b. Select Default for tolerance.

Step 2. Create Geometry :


a. Create a curve with vector coordinate <24 0 0> from
origin.
b. Create 4 copies of curve by translate 4 repeat count of
curve with direction vector <24 0 0>.
c. Translate all the newly created curve in Y direction with
distance <0 48 0>.
d. Create two curves by rotating curves 1 and 2 with rotation
angle of 90 degree.
e. Create copy of newly created rotated curves at a distance
of <24 0 0>, <96 0 0> and <120 0 0>.

Step 3. Create Mesh : is made of congruent
a. Create curve mesh with topology as Bar and Global curves.
Edge Length of 12.

Step 4. Delete Repeated Nodes :


a. Delete repeated node by Equivalence whole model.

Step 5. Create Dead Loads from Engine

a. Under the Load/BCs tab, click Force
from Nodal group.
b. Enter dead_load for New Set Name. g
c. Click Input Data.
d. Enter <0 0 -150> for Force <F1 F2 d

Step 5. Create Dead Loads from Engine (Cont.)

Create the second dead load


a. Enter dead_load_2 as New Set
Name.
b. Click Input Data.
c. Enter <0 0 -960> for Force <F1 F2 c

a. Enter op_static_load_1 for
New Set Name.
b. Click Input Data. c

Step 7. Create Gravity Load on Frame

Step 8. Create Constraint for the Frame Support (Cont.)

to switch to different views.
b. When finished observing different
views, hide the Loads/BCs vectors by
clicking Reset Graphics.

Although the force directions may


appear vertical, they are, in fact, at
an angle. You can switch to
different views to observe this.

Step 9. Define the Material

Step 10. Define Element Property for Frame (Cont.)
Define the element property for the frame

a. Under the Home tab, click Label Control b

b. Display Curve labels, and remove Node a
labels.
c. Click Select Application Region.
d. Click Pick All from Picking Filter Toolbar.
e. Click Add.

Step 11. Check the Load Case

Step 12. Set up and Run the Analysis

Set up a linear static analysis and


run it:
a. Under the Analysis tab, click
Entire Model from Analyze
group.
b. Click Solution Type.
c. Select LINEAR STATIC for c
Solution Type.
d. Click OK.
e. Click Apply.

Step 13. Access Results Under Analysis

Attach the xdb file to access the


results:
a. Select
• Access Results as Action
• Attach XDB as Object c
b. Click Select Results File.
c. Select frame.xdb.
d. Click OK.

Step 14. Plot Deformation

a. Hide labels by clicking Cycle

Step 15. Plot Axial Bar Stresses
Create a fringe plot of axial bar stresses:
a. Click Select Results.
b. Select Bar Stresses, Axial for Select Fringe

c. Select X Component as Quantity.
