TEACHING OF READING SKILLS

– Course attendance (e.g., Attendance, cancelation, postponement,

COURSE OUTLINE
• Theories and concepts of reading in the first and
second language
• Designing reading course
• Planning lessons to teach reading skills
• Micro teaching of lesson plans

COURSE OUTLINE
• Slides will be provided every week via Putra Blast
• Lecture and lab sessions will be mostly the lecturer’s
responsibilities, HOWEVER, student activities will be
done from time to time
• Both lecture and lab sessions will require students to
either pair up or be in groups, in which activities will
revolve around the students, i.e., student-centered
learning
COURSE OUTLINE
• 2-hour lecture
• 3-hour lab session
• 2 mid-term examinations – WEEK 5/6/7 & WEEK
8/9/10 – covering every topic from the first half of
the semester (20% + 20%)
• 1 assignment, i.e., individual lesson plans & micro
teaching (BY WEEK 11) (15% Lesson Plan + 15% Micro
Teaching),
• 1 final examination (covering every topic from the
second half of the semester) (30%)
WHAT WE NEED
• Class representative (i.e., to liaise with lecturer in
regards to almost everything, e.g., attendance, class
cancelation/postponement, announcements, etc.)
• Books – lend from the library
• If you want to buy these books, just buy the Tracey &
Morrow (2012) & Smith (2011) books
(WARNING – VERY EXPENSIVE)
• Most of the notes will be based on these 2 books
• Slides will be provided every week via Putra Blast
ATTENDANCE
• Please fill out the first row of the first column
in the attendance list
– Must fulfill 80% attendance
– Must come to class ON TIME – those who come
later than 10 minutes into class should NOT enter
the classroom, UNLESS YOU HAVE GIVEN PRIOR
NOTICE (via email to the lecturer or via the class
representative)
– ABSENCE: Formal documents (e.g., medical
certificate) must be given DURING THE SAME
WEEK that you will be absent

• RULES IN THE LECTURE ROOM / LAB ROOM
– FOOD:
• Water – YES / Other beverages – NO
• Snacks – YES / Heavy meals – NO
– CELLPHONES: Silent Mode (if you need to answer
an important call, ask permission to go outside to
answer the call)
– LAPTOPS/TABLET PCs/IPADS: ALLOWED, BUT only
for educational matters

• QUESTIONS
– Questions can be asked throughout the lecture/lab
sessions, AND can also be answered by other students
– HOWEVER, to ask questions you need to wait until
the lecturer has finished his sentence, and you need
to raise your hand for permission to ask question
– Do not interrupt the lecturer or your friend when
they are speaking or asking/answering questions
– No talking in class (especially during lecture or
presentation)

• COMMUNICATION IN THE CLASS
– NO FOUL LANGUAGES in the classroom
– NO TALKING during lecture or friends’
presentation
– RESPECT the lecturer and peers in the class – If
you disagree to somebody’s point of view, offer
your own point of view in a RESPECTFUL manner

• ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION
– All assignments (i.e., individual and group
assignments) must be submitted ON TIME
– Failure to do so will result in you and/or your
group members to fail this assignment
– Those who need more time to complete the
assignment must request for extra time PRIOR to
date of submission, BUT marks will be deducted

• SITTING FOR QUIZZES/MID TERMS/FINAL
EXAMINATION
– Those who come late for the quiz/mid term/final
examination will not be allowed to take it
– This will result in you failing this quiz/mid
term/final examination
– Those who cannot sit for the quiz/mid term/final
examination (with valid reasons) must provide
proper documents PRIOR to the quiz/mid
term/final examination, AND will have to sit for a
replacement quiz/mid term/final examination

• LECTURER/COURSE EVALUATION
– At the end of the course, PLEASE fill out the
online course evaluation – THIS IS IMPORTANT
– If you have any concerns/issues with the course,
you should consult with the lecturer personally
– We can set up a meeting to discuss about your
concerns/issues in my office
