Biography Cereal Box Project
Sometimes famous athletes get their picture on the cover of a cereal box. Why can’t other
people who made a difference? Now’s your chance! You get to design a new cereal box for an
influential African American.
Directions
Choose an influential African American to research. See your teacher for a list of names.
Use the following websites to help you find pertinent information about your person.
o Galileo (www.galileo.usg.edu) Password: base
o Biography (www.biography.com)
o Fact Monster (www.factmonster.com)
FYI: Books about your person may be available in your school library or at the
public library.
Cover an empty cereal box with colored paper (wrapping, construction, etc.) and include the
following:
Front of Box
Cereal Name
o The cereal name must be in big, bold letters. Be creative. Think of something that
goes with your person.
Example: Bessie Coleman = Frosted Flight Flakes
Picture/Person’s Name
o Include a picture of the person along with his/her name.
Prize
o Some cereal boxes have prizes. Include an ad for a prize that represents your person.
Example: Bessie Coleman = Free toy airplane in every box (because she was the
first African American woman to become an airplane pilot)
At least 3 Selling Points
o The selling points must represent your person.
Example: Bessie Coleman
Added persistence

Slogan
o At the bottom, include a slogan.
Example: Bessie Coleman
The breakfast that will help you take flight!
Back of Box
Puzzle
o Design a word search puzzle that includes at least 10 key words about your person.
FYI: Puzzlemaker (www.puzzlemaker.com) is a really good tool to use in order
to help you create your word search puzzle.
Right Side
Label the right side of the box as Nutritional Facts.
In a bulleted list, add a minimum of 5 facts about the person. Include important information
such as date of birth, birthplace, family members, and early life. What is this person famous
for? What was his/her major accomplishments/achievements? If the person is deceased,
include the date of death.
o Please use complete sentences.
Left Side
Label the left side of the box as Ingredients.
o In a bulleted list, include your sources. A source is where the information came from.
The information may have come from a book, website, etc.
FYI: Citation Machine (www.citationmachine.net/#) is a good website to help
you cite your sources.

Pinterest (www.pinterest.com) is a really good website to help you get some ideas for your
cereal box.
