Tutorial notes
Week 1
Warm up: Stuck in the mud
- All students are organised into a 10m x10m area, 3 people are taggers and
half of the rest of the students are to have a ball each
- The taggers are to tag the other students, staying within the area
- If tagged, students stand with their legs apart, with the ball above their head
- Another student, not tagged, can roll the ball between the legs of the ‘stuck
student’ to get them back into the game
- Rotate through people being taggers
Stage 1
Progression
- Have the students pass the ball to the person stuck, who then have to pass it back to be back
into the game
Activity 2: 2 v 1
- In 5x5 area, 2 students become attackers and 1 is the defender
- Start with one person defending the passes of the two attacking
students
- If the defender touches the ball, they passer becomes the defender
and the defender now becomes an attacker
- Rotate through roles
Stage 2
Progression
- See how many touches between the attackers before a bad pass or dropping the ball
(30seconds)
HLTH 2203 Physical Performance Lab 3 Touch football 27th, 10th, 17th March – April
(Weeks 1-3)
Activity 3: 2 v 1
- In 10 v 5 grid have 2 attacking players start at one end and on defender
in the middle
- The defender runs forward and puts pressure on attackers.
- Attackers are to evade defender to score a try by getting the ball to the
other end and placing it on the ground
- Rotate through attackers and defenders
Stage 2/3
Progression
- Intro wraps and switches to manipulate play and beat the defender
- Combine 2 teams of 3 onto one grid to rotate through positions
- Add loop, by having defenders (3 students) starting on side of area at middle cones,
and attackers (6 students) at opposite side of area > students run around the cone in
front (attackers and defenders opposite) and becomes a 2 v 1 as before in the area
Ø Try wraps and switches
Modified game: 3 v 3
- In a 10 x 10 area, organise 3 attackers and 3 defenders
- Attackers are to work the area and try get passed defenders to score
a try
- If touched, start again, having 3 turns before rotating through
positons
- Have 3 teams of 3 on one area, therefore the extra group has a break
whilst other two are playing
- Include switches and wraps
Stage 3/4
Week 2
Warm up: Roll ball tag
- An area 10 x10m is used, with half the class getting a touch football each, and 6 students
being nominated to be taggers (number can be altered based on numbers in class).
- The taggers without a ball are to tag the students with touch balls. If
tagged, students are to slam the ball down, then step over (replicating a
roll ball as used in touch football) for the tagger to then pick up and no
longer be a tagger.
- The student who was tagged picks up the ball and now becomes a tagger
- Students continue until concept is understood and bodies are warmed up
Stage 1
Progression
- To progress students, if tagged, they are to slam the ball down and step over, however for
the tagger to pick the ball up, they are to tap the ball with their foot, replicating a tap ball,
which is used at the start of play, after a try is scored and when a penalty is awarded.
- Have more students to be taggers and increase the area to make it more challenging
KTP
- Roll ball: slam ball down and step over
- Tap ball: ball on ground, kick slightly forward with foot and then pick up.
- On the way back, the ball is passed to the next person so they can
receive the ball on the run
- Rotate through groups, and switch the starting person each time to
ensure all students have a turn
Stage 2
Progression
- Split the class evenly into two groups and set up the same drill on the
other side of the area. Have the two groups compete against each
other to see who can complete 2 rounds of staggered passing first
KTP
- Step out to the side
- Step in with other foot
- Release ball backwards to oncoming player
- The defender has to move back 5m after each touch before coming forward and going for
the next touch
- Students continue to the end of the area, then switch roles and come back before the net
group is to go
Stage 3
KTP
- Fast roll balls
- Initiate the touch
- Passing backwards and at speed
Week 3
Warm up
- Students organised into pairs, spreading out across the area
- Simple passing to each other, changing side each time; rotating 180 degrees to face the
other way each pass.
Progression
- Position facing each other, pass ball between each other until ‘go’ is
called by teacher
- Whoever has the ball when called runs towards a cone 5m away whilst
their partner tries to tag them.
Stage 1
KTP
- Lateral passing accurately to partner
- Spiral trajectory
- Running at speed
Warm up activity 2: 1 v 1
- Organised on grids approximately 10m x 10m with one corner cone being attacking and one
corner cone being defending. Balls on the attacking side
- One attacker runs out with the ball and aims to score on either side-
line in front of them. Defender aims to prevent them scoring and
making the touch
- Rotate sides after each turn to ensure all students attack and defend
Stage 1
Progression
- Start with tap
- Increase playing area
- Include more players
KTP
- Attacking players using evading skills to dodge the defender
- Defender putting pressure on attacker
- Fast space, running at speed
Activity 1: 3 v 1
- Students are organised into groups of 5, with 3 being attackers, 1 defender and 1 umpire
- In a straight-line area 20-25m long, attackers aim initiate the touch to
progress up the field to score a touchdown, while the defender aims to
make the touch.
- Umpire must control game and ensure defending player gets back 5m
after each touch
- Students rotate roles after each turn
Stage 2
Progression
- Increase area
- Change number of players
- Incorporate switches and wraps
KTP
- Initiate the touch on defender – gain distance
- Attackers positioned to receive ball
- Running at speed
HLTH 2203 Physical Performance Lab 3 Touch football 27th, 10th, 17th March – April
(Weeks 1-3)
Activity 2: 3 v 2
- Students organised into 3 attackers and 2 defenders.
- Attackers aim to gain distance down the line to beat the defender and
score a touchdown in 3 touches.
- Defenders aim to make a touch and prevent attackers scoring
- Have students include pick and pop and pick and pass strategies to
increase chance of scoring
Stage 3
Progression
- Increase area
- Change number of students
- Include umpire to govern offside rule
KTP
- Effective attacking play to gain distance
- Running at speed
- Awareness of space and positioning
