Assessment Directions: If you look closely around the world you

live in, there are countless situations where mathematics can be used! This
assignment will require you to look around in your own daily lives and to use
your own experiences combined with lots of creativity to design word
problems that can be solved using trigonometry.

Students may work individually, in pairs, or in groups of three.

No more than three in a group!
Each group will be required to come up with three unique and creative word
problems (each word problem must be at least 40 words) that is based on
something they observed or experienced in their own lives. Using a camera
or a phone, students will take a picture of a situation encountered in their
lives and then design a word problem based on that picture. Each word
problem should be posed clearly and with sufficient information that allows
a triangle to be drawn and a solution to be found. I have posted an example
that meets my expectations at the very bottom.

The first word problem will require the use of one of any of the three
trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, or tangent ratio) to solve for either a
missing side or a missing angle of a right triangle.

The second word problem will require the use of one of the two special
right triangles (45°-45°-90° or 30°-60°-90°) to find a missing side.

The third word problem will require the use of either the Law of Sines or
the Law of Cosines to solve for a missing side or angle. Make sure the
triangle needed to solve this word problem is NOT a right triangle.

Once you have your three pictures and three word problems, solve each
problem by clearly drawing and labeling an appropriate triangle and then
showing all steps leading up to the final solution.

Each group will create a 5-8 minute video presentation with at least 3
slides using Knovio (you can create an account and is free to use).
Each slide should have the picture that you took, your word problem, the
appropriately drawn and labelled triangle, and the complete work to reach the
solution. For the slides, I recommend creating them on PowerPoint and then
uploading them to Knovio.
Look for programs that allow you to type in the mathematical equations and
expressions so that your work is neat and orderly. If you have Microsoft
Word, for example, click on the following link to see how to insert
mathematical symbols. You can also type in mathematical
equations and symbols directly from PowerPoint as well.

In your presentation, you will be graded on creativity, neatness and

organization, accuracy, understanding, and on your ability
to communicate clearly.
