Directions: Write a one-page essay on the importance of synchronous/ asynchronous

education and how it could be useful in your teaching environment.

Asynchronous and Synchronous learning are two very new terms in my vocabulary and

are now two terms that I can also add to my educational technology toolkit. Each of these

educational approaches are important to consider using in our classrooms.

Asynchronous learning is beneficial from the standpoint that it gives the student control

over when their education occurs. This essentially eliminates the problem of students missing

class. With time frames in place rather than required meetings, students have no real excuse

for missing work and having incomplete assignments, making this a win for teachers as well as

students.

Synchronous learning is another beneficial teaching approach. Being that Synchronous

learning is the opposite of Asynchronous learning, this approach involves students and teachers

meeting online all at the same time. This allows teachers to all be present for class without

actually having to be at the same location. This type of meeting is important especially when

holding discussions. Students being able to speak to each other just as they would in person not

only gives this educational technology a personal touch, but ensures that students continue to

build on their social skills when interacting and engaging in classroom conversations.

Although each of these educational approaches have significant benefits I realize that

they do not come without their flaws. I feel that the importance of each of these strategies

comes when you as a teacher are able to use not just one of these approaches, but are able to

incorporate both into your classroom. Learning what works best for your students and finding

that balance is what matters most.
