Finite Element Analysis Set up and Results

1. Setup
Material Properties: Taken from
Matweb
A572 Steel
Unit: MPa
Failure Criteria: Von Misses
Elastic Modulus: 190 [GPa]
Poisson’s Ratio: 0.29
Mass Density: 7800 [kg/m^3]
Tensile Strength 450 [MPa]
Yield Strength 345 [MPa]

Cad Model:
As provided by coby,
The force notches as provided by
Lisa
Anchors:
Rigid Boundary Anchors without
displacement or moment freedom
in any direction.

Gravitational (Dead load)

9.8 m/s^2 in the -z direction

Live load:
Assumptions:
• Max People between 2
bones: 5
• Average weight per
person: 80 kg
• Max people load between
2 bones: 400 kg
• Load Case: Whale bones
must support 5 people on
the left and 5 people on
the right
• Bone People Loading:
4000 N
• Wind Loading: 30%
people loading
• Load Direction: Vertical
Direction
• Total Load: 5200 N
• Load Distribution:
distributed over all the
load notches
Meshing:
3d Tetrahedral automatic Mesh
Max element size: 1.39 Inch
Min element size: 0.0069 Inch

Mesh Independence:
A number of 2D Tetrahedral
Simulations were run, with results
within 5 % Error margin.
Mesh Density Convergence was
achieved by varying the element
size with results within 5% error
margin.
Welding feature is represented by
the fillet feature in the model at
the base of the wall.

Additional I beam section was

Added in the middle of the beam
as required to reduce the stress
distribution by providing
additional stiffening.

Additional support was required

for the Arm support plate.
Additional support is still required
and a redesign of this arm support
is suggested.

Von Misses Stress Distribution:

Close up view of maximum stress

points around the arm support hole
as well as around the lower force
notch.
Both these locations aren’t
considered critical to design results
given inaccuracies at modeling the
stress distribution around the
welding of the cable bracket, and
use of fastening elements such as
washers that will distribute the load
more equally around these singular
point elements.
Factor of Safety Analysis:
Most of the beam has a factor of
safety over 5.
Noted in the plot, are factor of
safety below 5,
All critical area’s have a factor of
safety above 2.
Close up View of Factor of Safety
plot at critical area around the arm
support plate and around the lower
force notch as discussed above.
Both these critical areas show
Factor of safety above 2

A redesign of this critical area with

additional stiffening elements are
suggested.

Displacement Plot:
Maximum Displacement would be
41 mm at the tip of the bone.
