IC ENGINELAB (ME3475)

EXPERIMENT 2
KANGAD DEVANG (ME16BTECH11015)

Aim of the experiment is to analyse the variation of brake power, brake thermal
efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, and Pressure with respect to θ.

Instrument required for the experiment is VCR engine and all its tool required
for effective functioning, Stopwatch, Dynamometer etc.

 Theory:
Brake Mean Effective Pressure: The definition of BMEP is: the average (mean) pressure
which, IF imposed on the pistons uniformly from the top to the bottom of each power
stroke, would produce the measured (brake) power output. Please note that BMEP
is purely theoretical and has NOTHING to do with ACTUAL CYLINDER PRESSURES. It is
simply a tool to evaluate the efficiency of a given engine at producing torque from a
given displacement.

Brake Power: The power developed by the engine at the output shaft is called break
power. Indicated power produced inside the IC engine cylinder will be transmitted
through the piston connecting rod and crank. Therefore, a certain fraction of the
indicated power produced inside the cylinder will be lost due to friction of the moving
parts of the engine. Therefore, net power available at the crankshaft will be equal to
the difference between the Indicated power produced inside the engine cylinder and
the power lost due to friction. The net power available at the crankshaft is measured by
applying the brake and is therefore called brake power.

Spark Timing: Spark Timing or Ignition timing refers to the timing, relative to the
current piston position and crankshaft angle, of the release of a spark in the
combustion chamber near the end of the compression stroke.

Brake Thermal Efficiency: Brake thermal efficiency of engine is ratio of BP and FP

Brake specific fuel consumption is the ratio of fuel consumption in kg/hr to the brake
power(kW). So its units are kg/(hr-kW). It is indicative of how much fuel is consumed in
producing 3.6*106 joules of energy or a power of 1kW for 1 hour.

 How to Perform Experiment:

 Take RPM constant and equivalence ratio as 1.

 Crank the VCR and set it at 1500rpm
 Initial spark timing was taken 12o from BDC and it is changed for different
observation load was kept 6kg
 Measure the time to consume 12cc fuel.
 Repeat for different spark timing
 Do the calculation.

Parameters of the Experiment Calculation

L=0.11 m
B=0.0875 m
N=1500 rpm

Density of Fuel=820 kg/m3

Calorific value of fuel=44800 J/kg
