4. The Safety Engineer is responsible to ensure that all Safety precautions are in place, and that all personnel on site
are using the required Personal Protective Equipment (helmet, gloves, shoes, coveralls, etc.). He must also ensure
that all relevant permissions are available for the works.
9. PROCEDURE
9.1. Approval of the Mock up Sample
1. A mock up shall be made for the Consultant’s approval. The mock up shall be approximately 12 sq. Once the
mock up is approved it shall be incorporated in the works but all rejected mock ups shall be removed. The quality
of all subsequent Block works shall match the approved mock up.
9.2. Preliminary
1. Before commencing masonry works, all relevant approved shop drawings shall be provided incorporating block wall
partitioning, the sizes and locations of architectural and electrical/ mechanical services openings.
b. Dry Shrinkage, Water Absorption, and Apparent Density: 20 blocks shall be selected from lot size of
10,000units or less
c. For large Deliveries (All Tests):40 blocks shall be selected from lot size between 10,000 units of
100,000units
Or
d. 20 blocks shall be selected from each lot of 50,000units for deliveries greater than 100,000units.
3. Testing of Mortar: A set of six specimens shall be prepared for every 150 sq. of wall. The specimens shall be made
and stored according to the method given in BS 4551.
a. Testing of Samples: 1. at the end of seven days three of the mortar specimens shall be tested for strength
in accordance with BS 4551. Work may proceed if the 7 day strengths are in excess of those specified. In
the event of the 7 day sample failing to meet the strength requirements the Contractor may elect to
continue work at his own risk, while awaiting the results of the 28 day test. If the 28 day site samples fail to
meet the requirements, the Contractor shall take down and rebuild the work affected.
b. The required 7 and 28 days mean compressive mortar strength for 7 and 28 days shall not be less than
1.7 and 2.5 M/mm2 respectively.
4. The required 7 day strength shown above is for guidance only and is valid for Portland cement without any
additives.
5. Test results shall be submitted to the Consultant for approval.
9.7. Mortar
1. The mortar shall be 1:5 ratio of cement to sand. All mixing shall be done using mechanical mixer. The mortar and
grout for block work shall be as per approved mix design. The mortar shall be volume batched using appropriate
sized gauge boxes at site and it shall be mixed by mechanical means. This means that boxes of 1.25 cubic foot
(1’ x 1’ x 1’3”) shall be provided to measure out the volume of sand added to the cement. So in the case of one
50kg bag of cement (1.25 cut.) three boxes of sand shall be mixed.
2. The mortar shall be transported to the building floor by either hoist or by crane bucket. A clean watertight bucket or
wheelbarrows shall be used for individual transporting of mortar mixture or grout.
3. The mortar shall be laid in a 15mm thick layer on concrete masonry blocks that have had their surfaces wetted.

5. Horizontal and vertical chasing for pipes, conduits, sleeves, electrical boxes and other items shall be done by saw
cutting as per the approved builders work drawing.
9.12. Tolerances
Tolerances of masonry construction shall be as per of specification 042200:
1. Tolerance on line Length up to and including 5m +/- 10mm
2. Length over 5m up to and including 10m +/- 15mm
3. Length over 10m +/- 20mm
4. Tolerance on height and level Height up to and including 3m +/- 5mm
5. Height over 3m up to and including 6m +/- 15mm
6. Height over 6m +/- 20mm
7. Tolerance on plumb of walls in any storey height +/- 15mm

Figure 4: Hollow masonry block work with holdfast and mesh for internal areas.
4. Approved compressible fibre board shall be fixed between the soffit and block work partitions.
5. Galvanized accessories shall be used for internal walls and stainless steel accessories for the external walls.
6. Fire sealant shall be provided all fire rated wall. Fire rated walls are marked out on Architectural floor plan shop
drawings.
7. For 100mm thick partitions
a. Option-1: For 100mm thick partitions LPSW ties shall be fixed to the soffit of the slab above the block wall
b. Option-2::300mm long 12mm Dia steel bars shall be fixed to the soffit of the slab above the block wall in
the following manner:
i. 50mm deep holes are drilled 1600mm apart.
ii. 300mm long 12mm diameter cold applied galvanization steel or 12mm diameter steel bars are
cut and coated with corrosion resistant cold zinc galvanized paint.
iii. When the block work reaches the last course of blocks, then the steel reinforcement shall be
fixed as shown in Fig.4 below:
9.18. Curing
4. Cover the masonry work with burlap and moist cure for at least 3 days.
9.19. Cleaning
5. Block work area shall be kept clean of mortar spills. At the end of the work shift the area shall be cleaned and
tidied.
2. Location of MEP services has to be coordinated prior to start the masonry works. The Surveyor or MEP Personnel
will mark the location, elevation and size of MEP openings at the walls. The blocks will be cut according to the MEP
requirements and install the blocks as per standard lay-out for the block works or.
3. The MEP penetration on the block walls will be marked after the completion of the block walls and partitions. The
Surveyor and MEP Engineers will check the location, elevation and sizes of all MEP embedments at the walls or
partitions. Using Grinders and cutting disks, the walls will be cut and chip in accordance to the approved location,
sizes and elevation of all MEP penetration in the walls. Cutting of installed blocks will be minimized to avoid
excessive damage. After completion of MEP penetration, the walls will be repaired using cement and sand mortar
or other approved materials suitable to the actual site condition.
4. Chasing in block walls shall be done by marking and cutting using hand grinders. This means that MEP installation
locations shall be marked out on the blocks, by the MEP workers. Then using grinders, groves shall be cut along
the marked up lines. The remaining block shall be removed by chisels and hammer as shown below in Fig.3. No
direct hammering of the block work shall be allowed!
