Movie: The Impossible

Disaster: Tsunami

“ The Impossible” is based on a tsunami that occured in 2004. This small family, takes a

Christmas vacation to Thailand to relax and to get rid of the worries of the world, however on

this vacation, a tsunami appears and destroys the resort and more. During the movie, the family

works to regather with each other after this devastating disasters that occured.

I chose this movie because of numerous reasons:

1. I have this interest of tsunami and I would like to learn more.

2. I want to know bad is destruction after these tsunamis hit.

3. My wife loves this movie.

Now seeing the movie, now I can see how destructive these tsunamis can get and deadly. In fact,

if we look at the statistics of this natural disaster, we can really see how much impact it has to a

country.

”Tsunamis were the most deadly sub-type of earthquake, with an average of 79 deaths for

every 1,000 people affected, compared to four deaths per 1,000 for ground movements.

This makes tsunamis almost twenty times more deadly than ground movements.”

Because tsunamis are made from earthquakes, we are going to be comparing two different

earthquakes, ground and water, preventionweb.net describes how these water earthquakes that

forms tsunamis are more dangerous. Due to the intensity of the earthquake on these in the water,

it allows the water to create a major wave with he same intensity of an earthquake, expect these

waves are heading towards surrounding land masses, where ground earthquakes only show their
intensity on certain location in a land masses. Destroying any towns on coastline that are

vulnerable to any tsunamis.

Although these major waves can be deadly and destructive, there are ways to be able to

evacuate before these waves come. The American Red Cross actually had a preparedness plan

and a evacuation plan when a tsunami is approaching your town. When you go to their website,

https://www.redcross.org, they give you tips on what you should do if you do not have time to

evacuate and teach you about the tsunami warning. This program is made to prevent chaos and

hectic wherever the tsunami is heading.

Now knowing more about tsunamis and what you should do when they are coming

towards the shore, we go back to the movie. Although Thailand has had numerous tsunamis,

Thailand is a poor country. Which means a lot of things, the country is poor so it may not have a

way to detect tsunami coming towards shore. Which in the movie it showed there was no

evacuation siren our warning period, which also tends to happen a lot when a poor country gets

hit by a natural disaster. The clip you see at the top of the movie did a fantastic job showing and

indicating what it is like during tsunami. The wave just goes through anything and everything,

causing everything to be a hazardous object to anyone in the water. The last thing I notice about

the movie was the way the people reacted after the disaster has stopped. It was like everyone's

plans has changed on that day, after the disaster hit, helping others was the plan that everyone

had in mind. Stopping everything you were doing to help someone who was hurt was just normal

for these people, which in the movie portrayed that perfectly. The movie was realistic, enjoyable,

and made you want to prepare for the worst. It was a good movie and would encourage anyone

to watch it.
