SYNTHESIS AND REACTION PAPER 2

“IN THE DARK OF NIGHT: THE UNFORESEEN TERROR OF EARTHQUAKE

STRIKES”

SYNTHESIS

Four Decades ago, a massive earthquake hit the Moro Gulf region of the Philippines.
17th day of August year 1977, at midnight a magnitude of 8.0 hit Cotabato City in Mindanao,
while the other people in the region were still sleeping. This caused a tremendous disaster and
around 8,000 people lost their lives. The aftershocks also caused a tsunami that is considered
the most devastating tsunami ever recorded in the Philippines, about 700km was affected at
the coastline with Pagadian City, Cotabato City, Zamboanga City, and Lebak in Sultan
Kudarat experiencing the highest waves.

In this said disaster, Mrs. Norma Uday was interviewed about her experience during
the disaster at the age of 23. She has two children. Norma Uday says that the scariest scene
she has seen during the earthquake was that one of her children almost got hit by a falling
window glass, and this got them alarmed. After the earthquake, they expected that it was safe
to go outside even though there were slight aftershocks, but sadly a tsunami arose, and
several people died.

REACTION

Earthquakes are one of the major causes of severe injuries and death. It can cause the
most the most devastating and traumatizing events that a human can ever experience.
Knowing this disaster that happened in Cotabato City, Mindanao, truly melts my heart,
knowing that a lot of people died in the said disaster. I think if I were in a situation like this, I
could say that there is a small probability that I’ll survive the disaster because it happened
during the night, which probably means that several people are asleep.

Moreover, aftershocks also need to be considered an alarming event because

sometimes they can create tsunamis or they can still have adverse effects on us, the people.
So, it is crucial for us to stay alert and know our surroundings at any time, especially in this
kind of disaster, to be prepared for any possible hazard. And we also need to consider our
location, especially if you are living near the coast. It is advisable that if there is an
earthquake, never hesitate to evacuate to higher ground to prevent the effects of the tsunami.

Furthermore, in this type of disaster, it is also important that we are always prepared
with our safety kits. Just like Norma Uday said, safety kits are a must, especially if there are
unpredictable disasters that are going to happen, like earthquakes. By preparing our safety
kits, we can prevent the too-great effect that an earthquake can cause. For example, if
someone gets wounded, if we have a safety kit, we can treat it as soon as we want, which can
lessen the bleeding. Aside from safety kits, we can also prepare a go bag. Go bags are so
essential in any kind of disaster, especially this kind. An earthquake can sometimes be
followed by a tsunami, so we must prepare our go-bags if we ever need to evacuate. And
lastly, our hope. We consider that an earthquake can cause death, but always remember that
there is still hope. Just always remember that despite a tremendous disaster, there’s still a
chance that we can stand again and continue.

In a nutshell, being in this kind of disaster is very traumatizing and devastating. But
we can still cope with it and deal with it if we are prepared to face it. We know that we can’t
predict when or where an earthquake may hit, so it’s crucial for us to always be prepared. In
this manner, we can lessen the adverse effects of an earthquake. Just like they’ve said, “There
is no harm in hoping for the best as long as you’re prepared for the worst.”
