Guidelines For Strategic Management Paper Oral Defense For The Panel Members
2. Question and Answer (20 minutes). The panel members will ask questions
pertaining to all aspects of the STRAMA paper to validate the student’s mastery
of the firm and the use of concepts to recommend viable strategies. The panel
should assess the learner’s understanding and correct application of the
concepts and tools in STRAMA. See criteria for the oral defense which are
indicated in the grading sheet.
It is suggested that panel members FOCUS on whether the student was able to
identify CORRECTLY the following:
a. The strategic issues or challenges facing the firm based on the external and
internal analysis. The issues or challenges should not be operational but
strategic, i.e., having significant and long-term implications to defining and
sustaining the competitive position of the firm.
b. The strategic and financial objectives which should address the issues or
challenges.
c. The strategy recommendations which will help attain the defined objectives.
(ALIGNMENT of these 3 is most critical in assessing the fundamental
skills the student should have in completing a STRAMA course.
Failure to identify these factors and to secure alignment of issues or
challenges, strategic and financial objectives and strategy
recommendations merit a failing mark.)
Also, please test whether the student simply COPIED the paper from some
previous work. If there is a certainty or a probable doubt in the integrity of the
paper, note it in the remarks section of the grading sheet. Some indicators of
a plagiarized paper are as follows:
a. External and internal factors are outdated (browse the facts cited in the
paper including the tables, statistics, etc.)
b. The student cannot identify the strategic issues and there is no alignment
of the issues identified, objectives named and strategies recommended.
c. Financial projections include past years, i.e., 2016, 2017 and 2018.
d. No bibliography
e. The student don’t know basic concepts particularly the differences among
opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses.
f. The student cannot define the strategies being proposed (e.g. market
penetration, market development, product development, etc.) nor the
strategies are defined generically, i.e., pure definitions are provided
without a discussion on how the strategies will be actually implemented.
g. The student cannot simply answer the questions raised by the panel
members or simply don’t have a full grasp of the firm and the issues or
challenges the firm currently faces.
The student will be asked to step out of the room after the presentation while the
members of the panel discuss their evaluation and grading of the oral defense. It
is important to note that only ONE grading sheet will be submitted to the CAS
staff containing the defense grade (based on the consensus of the panel
members).
The panel members SHOULD NOT give the grade to the student after the
defense nor provide an indicator of the status of the defense. The grade should
only be given to the CAS staff who will forward it to the subject teacher.
FOR THE STUDENT:
6. After your oral presentation, state that you are open to receive questions and to
answer them. 20 minutes will be allocated for the Q&A. Listen to the questions
well and answer direct to the point. If you don’t know the answer, simply state
so. Don’t make up answers or don’t enter into arguments if you find that there is
a differing view between yourself and the panel members.
7. Take note of any recommendations given by the panel members.
8. Express gratitude after your presentation and leave the room to allow the panel
to do their deliberation. Make yourself accessible at this time.
9. Once called in, remove your file from the computer and ensure that the
equipment and the room is in order for the next presenter.
10. Leave the room after. The panel members will not disclose the defense grade.
11. The defense including the deliberation of the panel members will be completed in
45 minutes.
