SUMMARY
This document demonstrate the calculation and initial design for ground improvement use
Vacuum Preloading System.
In this document PT. Geotekindo find the best way to optimize Vacuum Preloading so the
total volume of backfill soil need to purchase greatly reduces. Furthermore, there is no
backfill soil should remove from site once the consolidation process finish and there is no
sliding risk.
Project area is Container Yard own by Pelindo III, Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan,
Indonesia.

I. INTRODUCTION
This document describes Vacuum Preloading System applied for Container Yard of
Pelindo III locate at Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Site Location
The purpose of this report is to calculate the consolidation settlement due to Vacuum
Preloading applied to Container Yard. Also it will show the original level, backfill
thickness etc.
The detail calculation and performance of Vacuum Preload Method will perform by PT.
Geotekindo after more discussion with owner about their need and technical requirement
of the area.

Base on the figure above and Borelog data of 10A and 10B, the soil condition can described
as below :
From the description, the settlement consolidation will mainly from layer (1) with total
soft layer thickness between 20 – 21 m.

The ground improvement will apply to all area. The soil improvement has several goals :
- To reduce or eliminate the consolidation settlement and differential settlement.
This is to avoid damage of the infrastructure due to ground settlement.
- To eliminate slope instability risk during preloading (if using vacuum preload).
- To increase soil strength.
This can lead to a more economical infrastructure design i.e thinner concrete
pavement, etc.
LOAD PLAN
Based on information, the container yard, which use 30 cm concrete slab as platform, will
support a 5 stack of container.
Take a typical 40 ft container, load of each container is 45 tons under a foot print of 2.4 m
x 12 m. The uniform working load on concrete platform is:
5 x 45 / (2.4 x 12) = 225 tons / 28.8 m2 = 7.81 t/m2.
The container is arranges in 6 rows on every block, so total width of each block is 6 x 2.4
m = 14.4 m.
Total thickness of concrete slab, lean concrete and backfill is 4.2 m as describe in sketch
below. So the load from the container will be distributes, assume 1:2, till reach the
original soil (soft soil). The schematic if the working load in plain strain is shown below:

INITIAL REPORT
FOR PELINDO III – CONTAINER YARD, TRISAKTI PORT
Takes B = 14.4 m, so the load will distribute to the soft soil (original soil) equal to:
B+H = 14.4 m + 4.2 m = 18.6 m (in plain strain).
Base on load distribution scheme above, the uniform working load on original soil (soft clay)
is:
7.81 t/m2 x (14.4 m / 18.6 m) = 6.31 t/m2.

IV. VACUUM PRELOADING METHOD
BASIC ASSUMPTION
Here is the basic assumption which use to simulate the work for Vacuum Preloading
Method :
- Existing level : +3.44 (top of concrete debris)
- Original soil level : +2.00 (after stripping)
- Final elevation : +3.90 (top of concrete platform)
- Concrete platform (K300) thickness : 0.3 m.
- Lean Concrete ( K175) thickness : 0.1 m.
- Total backfill (soil & base course) : 3.80 m.
- Vacuum Preload applied : 8.0 t/m2.
- Unit weight of compacted soil : 1.67 t/m2.
- Vacuum consolidation settlement : m
- PVD depth : 21 m (average)
- PVD distance : 1.1 m square pattern.
Below is the calculation base on construction stage for the Vacuum Preload Method. The
calculation base on 2.2 Ha (22.000 m2) area.

INITIAL REPORT
FOR PELINDO III – CONTAINER YARD, TRISAKTI PORT
Base on the table above, we can see the preload applied to original soil :
Maximum load applied during backfill up to +3.50 : 11.93 t/m2
Final load after vacuum finish and concrete slab : 4.89 t/m2
Preload applied to original soil :
11.93 – 4.89 = 7.04 t/m2 > 6.31 t/m2 (OK)
