Why We Need To Take Refuge

In Buddha’s teachings, all beings aside from the Noble disciples, who have realized the

Four Noble Truths, are clueless about the dangers of existence. All beings consider the

impermanent, non-self and suffering as the other way around. The Buddha introduces the

teachings of The Four Noble Truths to all the beings in the world to make them realize that there

is refuge from all the sufferings. There are 3 dangers stated to take refuge from:

1. Dangers of Present Life

Based on the Noble Truth of Suffering, birth leads to old age, disease, death, sorrow,

lamentation, pain, grief and despair. Man are exposed to dangers and accidents

whenever and wherever it is. The utmost important thing that we can never avoid from

would be death. Each and every one of us will finally meet upon it; it’s a matter of time.

2. Dangers of Future Lives

The harm and dangers on us doesn’t stop at death. According to Buddha’s teachings,

beings who have not eradicated craving are subject to rebirth either in happy or woeful

states. Happy exists in human and heavenly realms called ‘Sugati’ while woeful exists in

hell, animal, ghost and demon realms called ‘Duggati’. The danger of future life would

be the rebirth in woeful states, which is filled with sufferings and also the fact that

escaping therefrom is extremely difficult. The tendency to gain merits is very low when

one is in woeful state, therefore the chance to be reborn in the human realm is almost

impossible. So, this is what we need to be protected from. The Law of Kamma states:

wholesome actions produce desirable results while unwholesome actions produce

undesirable results. In order to avoid unhappy rebirth, we must avoid generating

unwholesome kamma. Therefore, we need the guidance of someone who truly

understands how the Law of Kamma operates. In this too, we have to learn how to

liberate our mind because the mind is difficult to control. In order to do this, we need

someone who knows well the way about our own minds and learn from them.

3. Dangers of The General Course of Existence (Samsara)

Aside from the risk of rebirth in woeful states, there is also suffering due to change and

suffering due to the conditioned nature of existence. Therefore, the only way to be

protected from dangers is to be away from any form of existence. According to the

Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering, craving for existence is the cause of rebirth

followed by the cycle of samsara. Also, it should be known that ignorance is the

underlying cause of craving and we should have the wisdom to ‘see things as they really

are’. This should dispel the ignorance and discard the craving for existence.
