HISTORY OF BAGASUMBOL FESTIVAL

One long forgotten account of one of the most successful revolution

in the Philippine history is the Bagasumbol. According to Prof. Rolando O.

Borrinaga, Ph.D of the University of the Philippines Manila on his

document about the Bagasumbol, on 10 October 1765, a government

document published in Manila appointed a certain Don Gaspar Ignacio de

Guevara as a parish priest in a town in Biliran. He then created a new

poblacion by transferring it away from its original site in a sitio to a

hilltop and set up a sanctuary, enthroned himself in the "chair of Peter"

with the royal throne in Biliran Island, and styled himself as the "first of

the priests of the world." Those who did not follow Padre Gaspar became

known as Bagasumbol or "obstacle to enemies," which waged territorial

border disputes against their "deserters" and "usurpers" in the new

poblacion he created. The townsfolk of Naval, Biliran province later on

celebrated Bagasumbol as a fiesta.

Just recently, the beautiful small island of Biliran, situated in the eastern

part of the Visayas region, celebrated its town’s fiesta, the Bagasumbol. It

is a fiesta to commemorate how Biliranons defended the island against

the colonization of the Moros and also, to honor the Virgin Mary of the

Rosary because of inspiring the folks in making the town a

diocese. Bagasumbol was the old name of Naval, the town proper of

Biliran province. Its literal meaning is “like a symbol of a great victory or

6
conquest”. “Sumbol” also means “Halad sa Birhen”.

According to a document about the historical events of Biliran province

written by Prof. Borrinaga, centuries ago, inhabitants of Leyte petitioned

the then governor general, Fernando Valdes, to allow them to resettle in

Biliran for it has been abandoned for 50 years

and bagamundos (vagabonds) were inhabiting it. Therefore, “Baga” of

Bagasumbol came from bagamundos who inhabited the island years ago.
