Short instructions
Part 1
Cast on loosely 20 stitches. On one side the border stitches will be done as chain stitches (this will be the outer
edge) and on the other side the border stitches will be done as little pearls (or nodules) to pick up the stitches for
part 2.
Now bind off loosely 19 stitches and pay attention that the last stitch is on the nodules edge.
From this edge pick up and knit 127 stitches. (= a total of 128 st). Turn work.
Next row: Knit all stitches through back loop. Turn work.
Part 2
Purl 64 stitches (here is the middle of work). p 1; p2tog; p 2; turn work.
Next row: Slip the first stitch; k 4; ssk; k 2; turn work.
Next row: Slip the first stitch; k 6; ssk; k 2; turn work.
Next row: Slip the first stitch; p 8; p2tog; p 2; turn work.
Next row: Bind off loosely all stitches until 1 stitch is left.
Now pick up 22 stitches from the close-by edge (the cast-on edge respectively the bind-off edge of part 1).
Please notice that the rib building is corresponding to pattern!
To make a pointed corner, you must work the border stitches as in part 1 on the lower edge as chain stitches.
The decreases will only be worked at the inner edge as follows:
Do the decreases in every forward row until 2 stitches left. Knit these 2 stitches together, cut yarn, pull it through
the loop and sew it in.
Now rejoin the yarn on the other side and work the second pointed corner as before.
If you think that this method is too circuitous for you, you naturally can work the pointed cornes at the beginning of
part 1 by making increases at one side and decreases at the other.
I've knitted the pointed corners belated, because I was displeased about the appearance of the "cropped" corners.
The completed Wombat now must be damped and blocked softly, so that the texture of the pattern is preserved
after drying.
