Observation Questions for ELL/LEP student(s)

1.What techniques/methods/strategies do you see being used

with the ELL/LEP student(s)? Are they effective? Why or
why not? (Either specifically for the ELL student(s) or in
whole class/small group instruction)

Some strategies I observed ELL students use while in the classroom was
assisted note taking devices such as IPads. These were effective for students in
stage one because they could use the IPad to help type and translate their notes.

2.Do you notice any student behaviors that you would consider
“out of the ordinary”? Please describe in detail. (This
applies to both the ELL student(s) and other classroom
students)

Some behaviors I continually observed were certain ELL students were to

nervous or lacked to confidence to speak publicly. They would never answer
questions out loud or participate in anything that required speaking in class.

3.What type of interactions do you see between the ELL

student(s), other classroom students, and the teacher(s)?
Please describe in detail.

ELL students communicate the most with other ELL students (if they
speak the same language). This is because it is a safety net for them and
provides them with a form of comfort. They can speak their first
language and their ELL friends could help them learn the new language.
4.Identify resources/materials that are being used with the ELL
student(s). Please describe in detail how the ELL student
is using them. Do they appear to be effective? Explain.

ELL students used the majority same resources that every other student used.
The only difference was the Ipad and it did seem to be effective because it
helped the student translate the language.

5.Does the classroom environment seem to be comfortable for

the ELL student(s)? Please describe the environment and
explain how you made your decision.

Yes the students seem comfortable and the majority of ELL students sit near
each other. The students sit in rows.

6.What’s the “comfort” level of the ELL student(s) in regards

to the English language? What observations help you
arrive at your decision? Refer to the Vocabulary
Performance Indicators. At what level would you place
the ELL student? How did you decide on that level?

The students seem comfortable learning in English as they all have passing
grades. I came to this conclusion based on the students grades in the class. I
believe most of the ELL students are level 3 or 4. There is one exception who is
a level one. I came to this decision based on communicating to the students.

7.If you feel comfortable enough to ask, ask the cooperating

teacher (or ESL teacher) what type of
accomodations/modifications they have to make for the
ELL student(s). Please describe the types of
accomodations/modifications that were discussed. Do
they appear on the checklist? Why/why not do you think
they are present/not present on the checklist?

The accommodations provided to the majority of ELL students was treating them essentially as
IEP students. They often received modified tests and print out copy of the notes.
