Soldier, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, enshrined in the insignia of the College, Manas ki Jaat

The Sikh Educational Society (SES), Chandigarh, is a duly constituted and an elected body
which governs the College. This governing body comprises of eminent bureaucrats,
philanthropists, scholars, prominent educationists and administrators. The main endeavour of
the SES has been to provide a modern educational, cultural and social environment to the
students of this region.
The invaluable vision, varied experiences and constant encouragement of the members of the
SES contributes tremendously towards the growth of the College. They have armed the

About the College
Sri Guru Gobind Singh (SGGS) College Chandigarh was established in honour of the auspicious
occasion of the tercentennial birth year of the Tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji by the
Management, Sikh Educational Society (SES) in 1966, reflecting the ethos and commitment of his
universal teachings. Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, Chief Minister, Punjab, laid the foundation stone on
August 29, 1963, who was associated with the SES and supported it with zeal. Eminent visionaries
and supporters of education, Sardar Bakhshish Singh and Bawa Sarup Singh contributed profoundly
to develop the College into a significant Institution of learning and overall development.
NAAC re-accredited and affiliated to Panjab University Chandigarh, SGGS College was
established as the first co-educational institute of higher education in Chandigarh. A premier multi-
faculty co-educational institute of the City Beautiful, it is among the front runner institutes of North
India and has earned commendable achievements in academics as well as in extracurricular activities.
In 52 years of its existence, the College has produced great administrators, academicians, scholars,
sportsmen, artists, engineers, doctors, scientists, and many more. Though the number of girl students
remained low initially, they have been swelling gradually and are actively participating in all
activities, academic as well as extra-curricular. They have brought laurels to the College in every field
over the years.

Mission
“Excelsior” Chardi Kala – is our perpetual mood and “Well-being of all mankind” Sarbat da Bhalaa is our
mission. The insignia of the College carries an imprint of the 'Pen and Sword', a combination of wisdom and
valour, guarding the 'flame of knowledge' with the College motto -“All mankind is one” Manas ki Jaat Sabhae
Aekey Pehechanbo, inscribed atop. There has been a consistent endeavour in all these years to live up to the
ideals and teachings of the tenth Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji enshrined in the insignia of the College which
has been designed by the legendary artist S Sobha Singh.
Objectives
The College since its inception has suitably adapted itself to the changing educational set up. Its aim is to
provide an environment in which the students can excel in all domains such as academics, intellectual, spiritual
and physical. The lofty goals and laudable objectives of this College address to quality education, gainful
employment, equal opportunities and access to latest development in the fields of knowledge and technology.
Following objectives have been devised to impart quality education among the students:
1. To promote and maintain academic excellence by adopting academic programmes that ensures quality
education.
2. To use innovative techniques and professional skills for making the curriculum more relevant and
interactive.
3. To develop profound level of critical and analytical thinking among students by exploring problems.
4. To ensure holistic growth of the students by providing them equal opportunities to develop administrative
and leadership qualities.
5. To impart an educational philosophy to students synthesising a modern scientific approach with an
appreciation of culture, tradition and religion.
6. To foster realisation of social responsibility among students by encouraging them to join various clubs,
societies and associations to instill them with secular zeal.
7. To encourage high quality research among students and faculty leading to creation and dissemination of
knowledge so as to cater to needs of society and industry.
8. To produce sports persons of high caliber and with global competence.
Campus Life
Sri Guru Gobind Singh College is a premier institute of Sikh Educational Society. Committed to
academic excellence and a religio-cultural and social enhancement, the College was established in the
year 1966 as a tercentennial memorial to the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the
great saint-soldier and a scholar par excellence. Fifty Two years after its inception, the College has
progressed immensely to a co-educational institution of eminence and repute with 8 undergraduate
and 11 postgraduate courses being offered to 6418 students under the tutelage of 170 teaching faculty
supported by the office comprising of 99 non-teaching staff members.
The College has an On-campus Boys‟ Hostel with accommodation for 300 students and a hygienic
mess that provides wholesome meals. The Centre of Sikh Studies facilitates research studies in Guru
Granth Sahib and Sikh religio- cultural literature. Bhai Kanhaiya Health Centre provides free health
services to students. Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library offers a wide range of books, journals and
magazines to students. The Library uses SLIM21 software, user friendly software for library
automation. N-List E-Resources are available for access to the teaching staff. The Library has also
subscribed to DELNET (Developing Library Network) for use by both faculty and students. Four
Running Trophies and prizes in various disciplines are awarded to students every year. Various
College activities and Social Relevance programmes including Gurmat Vichaar Sabha, NCC (Naval
and Army Wings), NSS, Red Ribbon Club, and Environment Society are proactive in the college to
ensure an overall development of the students. To leverage student potential, the college also has
various Clubs, Associations and Societies like Expression Club, TechMates, Mosaic, Young
Speaker‟s Association, Dr. Salim Ali Zoological Society, Physics Society, Chemical Society, Biotech
Society, etc. These offer a conducive platform to students to hone their technical and creative abilities,
motivate them to expand their horizons beyond the academic paradigm and come up with innovative
ideas. Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, and Guest lectures are regularly organised in every
Session.
To address the student related grievances, there exist appropriate platforms like Grievance Redressal
Cell, Anti-Ragging Squad, etc. The College takes immense pride in the fact that it has a considerable
number of foreign students from diverse countries on its rolls. The College has a duly elected Student
Central Association, dedicated to social, organisational activities, representative and academic support
of the students. The Council works actively in co-ordination with the teachers in maintaining the
academic discipline, organising various social, cultural, literary, sports and community oriented
activities. The election of Student Central Association is done strictly following the Lyngdoh
Committee norms and the core democratic ideals of the College.
The Placement and Career Counseling Cell facilitates campus interviews and Placements. Students
actively contribute in the College Magazine Agammi Jyot and articulate their creativity on this forum
especially intended for their expression. A highly committed team of convenors supervise the overall
preparation of students in PU Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival .The College has witnessed an
enthusiastic participation of students in Sports and provides timely incentives to sportspersons.
Inspired by the zeal to promote higher learning there has been a consistent endeavour to impart
quality education to a large and varied sections of society without any distinction of caste and religion
to enhance student potential.

Sports Achievements (2017-18)
Our College students have shown outstanding performance in all the games. Most of the
students have represented the College at All India Intervarsity, Senior National, International
and Inter College level competitions and won laurels not only for the College but also for the
Panjab University, Chandigarh.
Keeping the tradition of winning, this year also our College maintained top position to win
Sir Shadi Lal Trophy in the field of sports with 53,090 points for the 10th consecutive
year since 2008-09.

Important Instructions for Centralised Admission
1. Read the instructions and procedure thoroughly before filling the admission form for any course on the website
www.dhe.chd.gov.in
2. For the detailed admission schedule, candidate should refer to the website of the respective college
(www.sggscollege.ac.in) where she/he has been allotted the seat online.
3. Candidates are required to be present physically on the day of admission and bring a ‘Hard Copy’ of the admission
form along with the original documents, self attested photocopies and three recent passport size photographs
4. It is compulsory for the candidate to attend first counselling in the respective allotted college (SGGS College,
Chandigarh). Candidate, who does not report on the day of first counselling, will lose the right to admission in the
subsequent 2nd and 3rd counselling.
5. After 3rd counselling, subsequent counselling will take place in respective college (SGGS College, Chandigarh) subject
to availability of seats.
6. If a reserve candidate falls under GENERAL CATEGORY merit list, the candidate will be given admission in the
GENERAL CATEGORY only. So the candidate must report as per admission schedule of General Category on the date
and time specified under General Category.
7. To complete the process of admission students will also fill the College Admission Form as per instructions given in the
college prospectus.

Decorum/ Attire
20. Peace and decorum must be maintained. Noise or disturbance of any kind will be fined heavily.
21. Students must not enter the mess without proper attire. Sikh boys to wear a turban/ patka at
meal times.
22. Boarders to be properly attired and Sikh boys to wear a turban/ patka while going to the
common room, dining hall or hostel office.
23. Students are expected to treat Hostel property as their own and be responsible for the safety and
maintenance of the furniture and other properties. Repair charges of damaged furniture will be
paid by the resident along with a minimum penalty of Rs 2,000.
24. Repair charges for any damages including electric switches, window panes, doors and defacing,
etc., will have to be paid by the student concerned.
Vehicles
25. Boarders are not allowed to keep/ park vehicles in the Hostel premises. Violation of this rule
will be taken as a serious breach of discipline.
26. Appropriate space is provided for parking cycles and two-wheelers. College authorities will not
be responsible for any loss of a wrongly parked vehicle.
Intoxicants
27. Possession of tobacco, related material, alcoholic beverage or any form of INTOXICANTS will
lead to expulsion from the Hostel immediately.
Electricity/ Water
28. Lights must be switched off before leaving the room and before going to bed.
29. Water taps must be turned off after taking a bath or washing clothes.
30. Use of electrical appliances such as iron, heaters, coolers, immersion rods, etc is not allowed in
the hostel.
31. Violation of any of the above mentioned rules (no 28-30) would entail a penalty of Rs 1,000 to
Rs 1,500 and repair charges of electric wires.
32. The College is a pioneer in providing hot water bath to the boarders. Geysers are installed in
bathrooms. The facility is available at a nominal cost to meet the electricity charges during the
winter months.
Cash and Valuables
33. Boarders are discouraged from keeping cash and valuables in their rooms. Doing so will be at
their own risk, the hostel authorities will not be responsible for any such loss. Expensive
electronic gadgets are not allowed in the Hostel.
34. Mobile phones may be used at their own risk.
35. The SBI has a Full Fledged Branch in the College to provide banking facilities to the students.
To the Parents and Guardians
36. Parents are requested to give wholehearted cooperation and take keen interest in their wards
during their stay in the College. This is a delicate phase in the life of a student when their future
is being shaped. Enough care is taken to maintain a balance between restraint and enthusiasm
while seeking cooperation from parents and guardians. Parents and local guardians should
remain in constant touch with their wards, warden and class teachers. They are also requested to
respond to the call of the authorities immediately.
NOTE: Principal reserves the right to change any of the rules, without notice, for the sake of a
healthy atmosphere of the College.
The College has been awarded the coveted ‘Sir Shaadi Lal Founder's Day Celebrations
Trophy’ – The general Championship in Sports (PU), for
10th Consecutive Year.
