Achievements of Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited

Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL), which came into being on
16/04/2012 is entrusted with the construction of Transmission Works in the State of Punjab.
During the year 2012-2013, 7 nos. 66KV Grid S/Stns. Namely Ikolaha, Passiana,
Gaunsgarh, Bassi Pathana, Udhoke, Kakrala and Dhaanaula have been upgraded to 220KV
by the PSTCL. In addition, 132KV S/Stn. Talwandi Bhai has been upgraded to 220KV.

Further the transformation capacity of 15 nos. existing 220KV Grid S/Stns. Has also
been enhanced to cater the increased load demand during the coming paddy season 2013 by
adding 13 nos. additional 100/160 MVA power transformers in the system at 220KV Grid
S/Stn. Kharar, Ferozepur, Road Ludhiana, Goraya, Mohali-II, Kotli Surat Mali, Mansa,
Sadiq, Sarna, Doraha, Sultanpur Lodhi, Lalru, Butari and Lalton Kalan. The capacity of 2 no.
running Power Transformer has been augmented at 220KV Grid S/Stn. Sunam and Lehra
Mohabbat.

Total capacity of 2925 MW has been added in the state transmission system during
this year. To improve the voltage profile of the grid system, shunt capacitors of 613 MVAR
capacity has been commissioned during the current year.

Before Paddy-2013, the transformation capacity of 220KV Grid S/Stn. Nabha,

Jagraon and Malerkotla shall be increased by providing 160MW power transformers at these
Grid S/Stns. Additional 100MW Power Transformer shall also be provided at 220KV Grid
S/STn., Mehal Kalan. The existing 66KV Grid S/Stn. at Devigarh, Banga and Chhajli shall
also be upgraded to 220KV before Paddy-2013. This will definitely improve the power
supply position in these areas.

It will be relevant to mention here that in the first year of its inception i.e. 2010-
2011, 2294 MW 220KV and 1747 MW 66KV totalling 4041 MW capacity has been added in
the state grid system. 10 nos. new 220KV Grid S/Stns were commisoned at Himmatpura,
Passiana, Kharar, Sadiq, Pakhowal, Nabha, Ferozepur Road Ludhiana, Malout, Algon and
Jhunir. In addition, 31 no. new 66KV S/Stn. were also commissioned. The capacity of 12 nos.
220KV Substations, 9 nos. 132KV Substations and 133 nos. 66KV Substations were
enhanced by adding new Power Transformers and also by augmenting the existing
transformers.

Similarly during 2011-12, 8 nos. 220KV Grid S/Stn. at Kanjli, Lalru, Mandi
Gobindgarh-IV, Rihana Jattan, Doraha, Chhola Sahib, Mehalkalan and Mastewal were
commissioned. In addition, 7 no. new 66KV Grid S/Stn. were also commissioned during the
year beside increasing the existing capacity of 9 no. 220KV Grid S/Stn. at Khasa, Butari,
Patran, Dasuya, Dhuri, Kotla Janga, Rashiana, Himmatpura and Wadala Granthian vis-à-vis
14 nos. 132KV and 135 no. 66KV Grid S/Stn. thus adding total capacity of 3355MW in the
State Grid system which ultimately helped in providing adequate and quality power to the AP
consumers during last Paddy-2012. The 66KV S/Stn. construction work was shifted to
PSPCL w.e.f. 01/12/2011.

However the position of transformation capacity added in the grid system vis-a -vis
erection of Transmission Lines & expenditure incurred during the year,2010-11 to 2012-13
is indicated as under:-
Year Grid Sub Stations 400/220/132/66 KV Expenditure incurred
Transformation capacity Transmission Lines (Rs. Crores)
added (in MW) erected (in circuit kms.)
2010-11 4041 929 313.00
2011-12 3355 861 800.00
2012-13 2925 1131 725.00
 The total transformation capacity of PSTCL as on 31.03.2010 was 15660 MW.
The same has been increased to 23261 MW as on 31.03.2013.
 Thus the capacity has been increased by 48.5% in the three years.

Above all the400 KV Ring Main system of PSTCL is nearing completion. Under
transmission system associated with Talwandi Sabo Power Project, 4 nos. 400KV Grid S/Stn.
at Dhuri, Makhu, Mukatsar and Nakodar are being constructed. Two nos. 500MW ICTs
(Inter Connecting Transformers) at 400KV Grid S/Stn. Dhuri have already been
commissioned. The remaining 400KV Grid S/Stn. are also expected to be completed before
Paddy-2013. This system along with Rajpura Thermal Project Scheme will help in evacuation
of power from the Generating Stations of Punjab which are at the advanced stage of
completion.

This system will make Punjab Grid very stable and robustic and reduce the losses. It will
ensure an alternative 220KV power supply in case of failure of regular lines. The voltage will
also improve.
