Beginning to fish can be a bit intimidating if you don’t have someone to guide you along
the way, as there are a lot of aspects of it that can be a bit confusing. Follow along with
these instructions to help your fishing experience get off on the right foot!
1. Picking a Rod
The first, and most obvious, step to starting to fish is picking out a fishing rod. It’s
important that you have an idea of what you are looking for when selecting a rod.
There are two types of rods that you should be choosing from:
Ponds/Lakes
Live Bait: Using live bait, such as minnows or worms, can be a great choice
for still water for beginners. It doesn’t take very much technique as often
the scent of the bait will attract the fish.
Deep Water: A good place to try to target when you are fishing is the deeper
waters. For still water like a lake or pond, this is likely just out into the middle.
When you are at a creek or river, oftentimes this will be on the side or bank.
Many fish try to stay in the deeper waters to keep cool during the warmer
months.
Taking Out the Hook: Use pliers and have a strong grip on the fish when you
are taking out the hook so that you avoid hurting the fish or hooking yourself
in the process
Holding the Fish: Understandably so, you might want to take a picture with
your catch. Be sure to either hold the fish straight up and down or horizontally,
supporting the belly. Failure to do so can result in damaging the fish’s jawbone.
Releasing the Fish: Do not keep the fish out of water for too long to avoid
putting its life in danger. When you put the fish back in the water, gently hold
onto it for a few seconds to let it revive slightly before releasing it.
