Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)

Lesson Idea Name: What’s that data all about?

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade
Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE3.MD.3 Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several
categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information
presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might
represent 5 pets.

Technology Standard Addressed:

5-Occupational Thinker

Selected Technology Tool: PowerPoint/Excel

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☒ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

PowerPoint is a great tool. Students are able to put instructions for each page in multiple languages,
manipulate many things within the program to best tailor them. With my lesson, I will give students the
freedom to create their PowerPoint to the best of their ability and make it “as pretty and creative” as they
want to. I will be there every step of the way to scaffold them and answer any questions they have. There will
be a collection of data as a whole class before the PowerPoint building occurs, that way we are all on task and
on the same page.

Lesson idea implementation:

This will take place in school computer lab, that way all students have access to a computer. Teacher will
open up the lesson with a poll about what the student’s favorite places to eat are. There are 3 options (to
make it easier for the students to analyze data) Chick-Fil-A, McDonalds, Chipotle. Students will raise their
hands and answer only once. Teacher will record data on PowerPoint using Smart Board or Interactive Board.
Teacher will introduce PowerPoint Software. Will show the basics (How to create a new slide, change
background, change fonts, input words, insert pictures) Students will follow along and make one title slide to
present data. Teacher will then introduce students to using a bar graph to show data on PowerPoint. This will
then lead the teacher/students to a Microsoft Excel Document to input data. Students will follow steps and
input all data from the poll take in the beginning of the lesson. Teacher will encourage students to add color,
pictures, and their own touch to their bar graph. Teacher will continue to walk around the classroom to make

sure students are on task and will help if needed. Teacher will allow time for students to create PowerPoint to
present their data. Teacher will then ask students to assess data they imputed onto bar graph and answer the
following questions by creating new slides on their Powerpoint:
“What place has the most votes?
What place has the least votes?
And
How many more votes does
Chick-Fil-A have than Chipotle?”

When students are finished with their PowerPoints, they will be told to “share” their file with the teacher
through Office365 on the computer. Teacher will demonstrate how to do this.
By the end of this lesson, student should be even more familiar with Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel,
and Microsoft Office 365 “cloud”.
Teacher will then grade and provide comments on each PowerPoint still through Office 365 and students will
then be invited back to computer lab to look over comments and adjust. Students will then be allowed to
print their data PowerPoint and take home.
Reflective Practice:
After designing this lesson, I feel as if the interactive lesson was a great idea. This made sure students were
interacting with the lesson and put their own personal touch on each PowerPoint they created! Students
should have a deepened understanding about graphing data and analyzing data with questions about “how
many more or how many less” To further my lesson, I could introduce Excel more to them and show they that
they could also create bar graphs on Excel to show their data. This will make them more efficient with
technology. Technology Tools that may further this lesson to increase Loti level, would be to invite the
students to create their own collection of data with some of their friends in class outside of school. They
would be put into partners or groups and then they could present to the class what data they assessed and
what their results looked like on a. bar graph using PowerPoint or Excel.
