Madeleine Leininger Biography

Leininger was born on 13 July 1925. She earned a nursing


diploma from St. Anthony's Hospital School of Nursing, followed
by undergraduate degrees at Benedictine College and Creighton
University. She received a Master of Science in
Nursing at Catholic University of America. She later studied
cultural and social anthropology at the University of Washington,
earning a PhD in 1966. Leininger held at least three honorary
doctoral degrees.

Leininger held faculty positions at the University of Cincinnati and


the University of Colorado, followed by service as a nursing
school dean at both the University of Washingtonand
the University of Utah. She was Professor Emeritus of Nursing
at Wayne State University and an adjunct faculty member at the
University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Leininger died
at her home in Omaha, Nebraska on 10 August 2012.

1. When and where were you born?

- I was born on July 13, 1925, in Sutton, Nebraska, U.S.

2. Where did you study?

- I studied at St. Anthony´s Hospital School of Nursing, Benedictine College and


Creighton University, Catholic University of America, and University of
Washington.

3. What honors and awards have you received?

- I recibed two honors: In 1998, Living Legend, American Academy of Nursing and
Distinguished Fellow, Royal College of Nursing in Australia.

4. What academic positions did you have?

- I held faculty positions at the University of Cincinnati and the University of


Colorado. I was Emeritus Professor of Nursing at Wayne State University, and
others.

5. How many books and did you publish?

- I published 27 books related to transcultural nursing among them “The concept of


transcultural nursing” and “Culture care Diversity and Universality.”

6. When did you start your organization?

- In 1974, I founded the organization, called, “National Transcultural Nursing


Society.

7. Why did you study nursing?

- I studied nursing because my aunt suffered from congenital heart disease.
