City of Chaos Questions and Answers

These are questions and official answers received from Martyn Oliver of Monocle Games
([email protected]).

1. Can you move diagonally?

Correct, no diagonal movement.

2. When you place a new tile, do you get to choose the orientation, or is it random?

Player's choice, depends on how hard you want the game to be, we always play placing the tiles at
random.

3. What is the definition of an "unoccupied" tile? Does the presence of location cards, monsters
that stick around like rats, etc. count? (We decided it meant no players were on the tile).

Nothing on the streets. Action cards placed on the tile and other players make the tile occupied, locations,
however, do not.

4. Do you draw one Action card at the end of your movement if you passed through an
unoccupied tile, or one every time you enter an unoccupied tile?

You draw an Action card only at the end of your turn if you finish on an unoccupied tile.

5. If you draw Rats or a Sewer Explosion, have you entered the tile already (and spent a
movement point) or not? Is the Sewer Explosion placed at the edge of the tile, or one square
in?

Belching sewers, fallen tree & pack 'o rats all block the tile completely. as the players only draw at the end
of the turn that's it. Next turn the player starts the turn on the square of the tile by which they entered &
must leave the tile immediately.

5. When you die, do you keep your Specials or drop them? Do you keep your Bless? Do you get
a new set of 3 groats when you restart?

You drop the Specials & lose any blessings, curses or diseases. You do not restart with any groats.

6. What level are you when you first join a guild?

Guild membership levels start at 1.

7. What happens if you make a choice then find out you need groats? Are you done or can you
go back and choose again?

If you make a choice then don't have the groats your turn ends.

8. In combat, can modifiers make your A or D go negative? E.g. Player does a Fireball spell
(+2A, -2D) and an A7/D0 card, monster does A0/Dx, does the player take 2 points of damage?

Yes, modifiers can go into the negative.

9. Do you always choose from a full set of combat options each combat round, or are cards
"used up" until the end of the turn or the end of the fight? (We played you can always choose
from the full set).

Yes, players always choose from the full set of Combat cards. There is an error on 1 of the cards, it reads
A4/D2 & should read A4/D3, apologies.
10. When two players are helping each other in combat, do they choose cards from separate
combat sets or the same set (i.e. can they choose the same option)? There are only 2 player
combat sets, if more than 2 players are involved in the same combat on one or both sides, what
combat decks do they use?

Yes, each player uses a separate pack for combat, if there are more than 2 players involved then players
must share their decks (production limitations meant only 2 decks are supplied).

11. Can you join combat on the side of the monster?

Yes, just add your combat card to the monsters, not very nice though is it? Combat, at present, ends
when one side is defeated, however, we are doing a revised version of the rules & this is going to say, if
you join a monster/s against another player and that player dies, then the player who was fighting with
the monster must look in the Combat tables to see if the monster has any score in the HEADS category, if
there is a score then the combat ends. If, however, there is no score in the HEADS then the monster
carries on & attacks that player/s. What do you think of this?

12. Does an NPC fighting on the side of the player draw a monster combat card at random and
apply it to help the player?

Yes, a NPC draws their card/s from the monster deck.

13. If there is a multiple group of monsters in combat (like Captain of the Guard), do they each
add their combat mods?

No, you just add the combat modifier once no matter how many monsters.

14. How do you round damage halved by the Mesmeric Double spell? How do you divide
damage among multiple participants if it's not evenly divisible? If you are fighting with
multiple companions and one of you casts Mesmeric Double, is everyone's damage divided in
half, or is the divisor for damage simply increased by one for the "double"?

Mesmeric Double only aids the Mesmerist, halving any damage against that player only. So in multi-player
combat share out any damage as normal amongst the players & NPC's then halve the damage done to the
Mesmerist, any remainder goes to the player.

[N.B. This of course doesn't completely answer the questions asked]

15. Will the Healer heal your NPC companions?

Yes, the Healer heals NPC's.

16. Can the Vampyre be hurt by "Attack Self"? More generally, does using a spell attack make
the A value of the combat card "magical" so it will hurt the vampyre, or only, say, the +2 of a
Fireball.

Yes. Attack self works against the Vampyre. Using a spell or magical item makes the whole attack
magical.

17. The Wild Hunt is listed as +3D in the combat Tables, and +0D in the Tome of Chaos
encounter. Which is correct?

Ooops, in the tome WH should be D3.

18. How often can you use the Mesmeric Head each turn?

Once, when ending the turn next to another player.

19. Will NPC companions help against the Prizefighter?

No the prizefight is strictly 1-to-1 unless you fight outside of the ring, where normal rules apply.

20. What are the stats of the "City Guard" you encounter when you get caught robbing the
Shop?

This should read ' Captain of the Guard', not City Guard, as it is his patrol you meet.

21. Are scrolls from the Magic deck "items" for purposes of being stolen or lost? Are Specials
"items"?

Any physical objects you are carrying are classed as items.

22. If the Fool takes you to the "nearest inn" do you have to walk there, or are you
immediately placed in the inn. What if there is no inn in play? Or do you simply lose a turn in
place?

You have to walk to an inn. If there are no inns on the board then you have to search for one as a priority.

23. What happens if two people acquire the same Special (e.g. the Mesmeric Head)? I'm
assuming from your earlier answers that if this arises with regular items (e.g. getting the
Tangle Net from both the Captain and the Escapologist) you just make a note that each player
has one, do you do the same thing with Specials?

Yes, the same as items.

24. Are Firework Rockets used up when you fight with them? Are they magical?

Yes, Rockets & all pyrotechnics are used up, they are not magical.

25. Some Action cards are discarded after an encounter, some say return to pack. a) Do you
shuffle a returned card into the pack immediately or do you save them up until the deck is
gone? b) Is there any time you reshuffle all the cards?

a) All cards, whether discarded or returned to pack are placed at the bottom of the pack.

b) No.

26. Do you have to be orthogonally adjacent to help in combat, or can you be diagonal? If A
joins B in combat, and C moves next to A but not B, can he join in as well?

Yes, needs to be at right angles to the combat to join.

27. Can Guild membership be voluntarily be given up?

No once a player has joined that's their career for life, unless thrown out.

28. If you are in the Brotherhood, and you Threaten in an encounter and the encounter attacks
you, can you use your Mug skill?

A thief can only use the Mug skill when they initiate the attack.

29. As with other distances, is distance for Chaos Unbound measured orthogonally?

Correct.
30. Will you guys be coming out with an alternate clue decks & tomes to change the quests
around so people don't simply learn all the answers?

Yes, we are working on expansions which include a new tome & clues.

Here are some other answers to queries we have received:

Don't draw an Action card on the City Gates tile.

If a player is trapped on a single tile, he can choose to commit suicide & restart at the City Gates.

If the City Gates are totally cut off from the rest of the City & a player has to restart, the player can
restart outside any Special Location tiles in play, as chosen by the other players.

Do not draw an Action Card if you end your turn inside a Location.

Combat stats for the Blacksmith are missing. They are BP11* Att 0 Def +1 Heads 1 Carrying 118. There
are 3 Blacksmiths.

Rabid Dog. Items/Magic that will scare away the dog are: Firework Rocket, Flash Powder, Fireball,
Snubnosed pistol, Magnesium rose or flare. The Mesmeric Head allows the player to behave as a
Mesmerist against the dog.

If you die inside the Dark Tower all your possessions are lost, any other location the players possessions
are placed on the tile, the 1st player there claims the goods.

To collect left items just land on the same tile not the exact square they are left on.

The Pyrotechnics can make as many Rockets, Flash Powders or Smokescreens as they like. Players can
buy as many tems, etc as they like. For production purposes we limited the no. of cards in the game.

When a player kills the Assassin, they are awarded a Cheesewire, this has been left out of the Items pack,
you can get it from the Action pack.

Ok that's it. Thanks for spending the time to contact us & I hope these queries don't spoil the game for
you. If you need any further clarification then please don't hesitate to contact us.
