What Is Gapped Text - Reading?
What Is Gapped Text - Reading?
A single page of text with some numbered gaps which represent missing paragraphs. After the text
there are some paragraphs which are not in the right order. You have to read the text and the
paragraphs and decide which paragraph best fits each gap.
Underline any references (‘these’, ‘they’, ‘it’, etc.) and linking words (‘although’, ‘but’,
etc.) in both the text and the sentences. Remember that words in the text may refer
forwards to something in the missing sentence, or to something in the text before or
after the gap.
Example
Here is a paragraph from a Part 6 text called ‘The World’s Smallest Bird’. The missing sentences are
inserted in the correct place.
Explanation: The words in the green boxes in the example above show you the links between the
text and the missing sentences.
There may be a connection between the text and the missing sentence through
vocabulary or topic.
Example
Here is a paragraph of PART 6 text called ‘The World’s Smallest Bird’. The missing sentences are
inserted in the text.
4 Bee hummingbirds measure a bit more than five centimetres from bill
to tail.
However, only the male of the species ranks as the smallest of birds, as the
female is slightly longer. Attached to a branch with spiders’ webs, their
nest is no bigger than a doll’s teacup. Its soft lining will hold two eggs
smaller than coffee beans.
Explanation: in 4, the topic of the paragraph is the size of the bee hummingbird. ‘However’
introduces a contrast to the missing sentence. In 5, the topic of the hummingbirds’ ‘aggressive
side’ is picked up by the word ‘fiercely’, in the example of ‘aerial battles’ and ‘war god’, which
provide a vocabulary connection.
