Fluid mechanics and Hydraulics

Problem set 7

Note: I will post a problem set on Fluid mechanics and Hydraulics a few weeks before the scheduled
removal exam. Take note that the topics involved in that particular problem set are the only topics
that will come out on that scheduled removal exam. So for this case, the topics here in problem set
7 are the only topics that will be used for your Removal exam no. 7 this coming July 2019.

Situation 1: A semi-circular gate is submerged in water where the diameter just touches the water surface. The
diameter of this gate is 1.2 meters.

1. Compute the distance (m) from the water surface to the center of pressure.
[a] 1.22 [b]0.71 [c]0.35 [d]5.66

Situation 2: A circular gate is submerged in water where the top of the gate just touches the water surface. The
diameter of this gate is 1.2 meters.

2. Compute the distance (m) from the water surface to the center of pressure.
[a] 0.55 [b]0.85 [c]0.75 [d]0.95

Situation 3: The velocity of the water jet is 15 m/s with a constant diameter of 50 mm. See Figure 4.

3. Compute the resultant component of the force (N) acting on the deflecting blade if the blade is stationary
[a] 435 [b]789 [c]95 [d]225

4. Compute the horizontal component of the force (N) acting on the deflecting blade if the blade moves to the
right at 6 m/s
[a] 55 [b]117 [c]145 [d]81

Situation 4: A hydraulic jump occurs in an open channel. The channel has a depth of 1.7 m and velocity of 3.1 m/s
before the jump occurs. After the jump, the depth is 2.5 m and the velocity is 3.7 m/s. The slope of the energy
gradient is 0.0075.

5. Find the Froude number after the jump.

[a] 0.23 [b]0.0067 [c]0.75 [d]0.59

Situation 5: A hydraulic jump occurs in a rectangular open channel. The channel has a water depth of 1.1 m before
the jump occurs. After the jump, the water depth is 2.9 m

6. Find the discharge per meter width in the channel (m3/s/m)

[a] 15.77 [b]11.06 [c]26.80 [d]7.91

Situation 6: A container has a depth of 1.6 m, width of 2.7 m and length of 3.6 m. It is placed in a larger
container with water. Tilting then occurs at an angle of 41.7 degrees. It tilts on the 2.7 meter side.

7. Find the draft (m) if the distance from metacentre to center of buoyancy is 1.35 m.
[a] 1.78 [b]0.92 [c]0.63 [d]2.9

Situation 7: A Dam is triangular in cross section as shown on Figure 5. The dam concrete has a unit weight of
23.54 kN/m3. Assume that the resultant of the Dam falls at 6/10 of the base width from the toe of the Dam. Use
unit weight of water = 9.81 kN/m3.

8. Find the bottom width of the dam (m)

[a]25.79 [b]18.86 [c]12.32 [d]9.03

9. Find the weight of the dam (kN)

[a]7,285.2 [b] 5,327.6 [c]3,480.2 [d]2,550.8

10. Find the righting moment (kN.m)

[a]125,256.2 [b]28,583.7 [c]15,355.8 [d]66,985.3
Situation 8: A trapezoidal weir has an angle of 37 degrees. Head of the weir is 0.57 m. Length of weir = 1.25 m.
Use C = 0.75.

11. Find the discharge (ft3/s)

[a] 5.3 [b]0.15 [c]47.3 [d]1.34

Situation 9: A trapezoidal weir has an angle of 26 degrees. Head of the weir is 0.37 m. Length of weir = 1.05 m.
Use C = 0.85.

12. Find the discharge (m3/s)

[a] 22.2 [b]0.63 [c]14.7 [d]1.04

Situation 10: A contracted rectangular weir has a length of 1.7 m and the head of the weir is 0.78 m. The
contraction is installed on both sides of the channel.

13. Find the discharge (m3/s)

[a] 69.2 [b]1.96 [c]35.3 [d]0.58

Situation 11: A closed cylindrical vessel, 2 m in diameter and 4 m high is filled with water to a height of 3 m.
The rest is filled with air, the pressure of which is 100 kPa. The vessel is rotated at 152 rpm.

14. Determine the distance from the bottom of the tank down to the tip of the imaginary paraboloid.
