REACTION PAPER ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGY OF ALFRED

ADLER

Adler’s childhood life was an emotional one because of his situation but instead to give
up, he motivates his self to surpass his weaknesses. He strives hard until he proposed
his theory about individual psychology and introduced the term inferiority feelings, and
later on called inferiority complex. I agreed to Alfred decision that he choose to motivate
his self to overcome his physical deficiencies and compensate his inferiority feelings
because according to Helen Keller, an American author “although the world is full of
suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it”.
In his theory, Alfred was right that inferiority feelings are the source of all human
striving. Because human striving begins to infancy, when a child realize that he can’t do
something because he is only a child that’s the time his inferiority feelings develop. The
child will think that he is a weak not like the adults people around him. That’s why
people motivate themselves to strive more to achieve their wants in life because of
inferiority feelings. In short inferiority feeling help us to strive and grow.
In striving for superiority it means that person have a goal to be as a whole and to finish
something that will make him or her satisfied. And for me, I can’t say that Adler is totally
correct that the human motivation is the expectation of a person to the future because
our past experiences have a great impact to our personality and to our future. And
according to Sigmund Freud our motivation is determined by our past experiences
which he has also a point. That’s why people are motivated because of their past
experiences, they want to correct the mistakes that they have done or they want to
become a better person in the future.
I highly agreed to the social interest of Alfred Adler that we need to interact and
cooperate to other people not only for our own interest but also for the sake of
everyone, just like what Mattie J.T Stepanek said that ‘unity is strength.. When there is
teamwork and cooperation wonderful things can be achieved’.
