3. TARGET MEAN STRENGTH OF CONCRETE
For a tolerance factor of 1.65 and using table 1 of IS 10262:1982, the target mean
strength of specified characteristic cube strength is 30 + (6 X 1.65) = 39.9 N/mm2

4. SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO

Let us assume we use ‘Type C’ cement. From ‘Fig 2’, the free water-cement
ratio required for the target mean strength of 39.9 N/mm2 is 0.37. But based on
experience we choose a water-cement ratio of 0.47.

5. SELECTION OF WATER AND SAND CONTENT

From Table 4 of IS 10262:1982, for 20 mm nominal maximum size aggregate
and sand conforming to Zone II, water content per cubic meter of concrete = 186
Kg and sand content as percentage of total aggregate by absolute volume = 35%
For change in values in water-cement ratio, compacting factor and sand
belonging to Zone II, the following adjustment is required
Change in condition Adjustment required
% sand in total
Water content %
aggregate
For decrease in water-cement ratio by
0 - 2.6
(0.60 – 0.47) that is 0.13
For increase in compacting factor by
+ 1.5 0
(0.85 – 0.80) that is 0.05
For sand conforming to Zone II 0 0
Total + 1.5 - 2.6

Therefore, required sand content as percentage of total aggregate by absolute

volume = 35.0 – 2.6 = 32.4 %
186 𝑥 1.5
And, required water content = 186 + = 188.79 l/m3

6. DETERMINATION OF CEMENT CONTENT
Water – cement ratio = 0.47
Water = 188.79 l/m3
188.79
Cement = = 401.68 Kg/m3 = 402 Kg/m3 (appox.)
0.47
According to cement content water content will be = (402 X 0.47) = 189 l/m3

7. DETERMINATION OF COARSE AND FINE AGGREGATE

CONTENT
From Table 3 of IS 10262:1982, for specified maximum size of aggregate of 20
mm, the amount of entrapped air in the wet concrete is 2%.
Taking this into account and applying the equations from clause no 3.5.1
402 1 𝑓𝑎 1
0.98 = (189 + + 𝑋 )X
2.87 0.324 2.67 1000
or, fa = 594.39 Kg/m3
402 1 𝐶𝑎 1
0.98 = (189 + + 𝑋 )X
2.87 1−0.324 2.87 1000
or, Ca = 1143.59 Kg/m3
The mix proportion then becomes:
Fine Coarse
Water Cement
Aggregate Aggregate
For 1 m3
189 l 402 Kg 594.39 Kg 1143.59 Kg
concrete
Ratio 0.47 1 1.5 2.8
For 0.025 m3
4.73 l 10.05 Kg 14.86 Kg 28.58 Kg
concrete

8. ACTUAL QUANTITIES REQUIRED FOR MIX PER BAG OF
CEMENT
The mix is 0.47 : 1 : 1.5 : 2.8 (by mass). For 50 Kg of cement, the quantities of
materials are worked out as below:
i) Cement = 50 Kg
ii) Sand = 75 Kg
iii) Coarse Aggregate = 140 Kg
a) Fraction I = 42 Kg
b) Fraction II = 98 Kg
iv) Water
a) For water-cement ratio of 0.47 quantity of water = 23.5 litres
b) Extra quantity of water to be added for absorption in case of coarse
(0.5−2.2)𝑋150
aggregate, at 2.23 percent by mass = = 2.55 litres
100
c) Extra quantity of water to be added for absorption in case of fine
(0.5−1.0)𝑋150
aggregate, at 1.0 percent by mass = = 0.75 litres
100
d) Actual quantity of water to be added = (23.5+2.55+0.75) = 26.8 litres
v) Actual quantity of sand required = (75 – 0.75) = 74.25 Kg
vi) Actual quantity of coarse aggregate required
a) Fraction I = (42 – 0.77) = 41.23 Kg
b) Fraction II = (98 – 1.78) = 96.22 Kg
Therefore, the actual quantities for different constituents required for the mix
are:
Water : 26.8 litres
Cement : 50 Kg
Sand : 74.25 Kg
Coarse Aggregate: Fraction I : 41.23 Kg
Fraction II : 96.22 Kg
