3. TARGET MEAN STRENGTH OF CONCRETE
For a tolerance factor of 1.65 and using table 1 of IS 10262:1982, the target mean
strength of specified characteristic cube strength is 30 + (6 X 1.65) = 39.9 N/mm2

6. DETERMINATION OF CEMENT CONTENT
Water – cement ratio = 0.47
Water = 188.79 l/m3
188.79
Cement = = 401.68 Kg/m3 = 402 Kg/m3 (appox.)
0.47
According to cement content water content will be = (402 X 0.47) = 189 l/m3

8. ACTUAL QUANTITIES REQUIRED FOR MIX PER BAG OF
CEMENT
The mix is 0.47 : 1 : 1.5 : 2.8 (by mass). For 50 Kg of cement, the quantities of
materials are worked out as below:
i) Cement = 50 Kg
ii) Sand = 75 Kg
iii) Coarse Aggregate = 140 Kg
a) Fraction I = 42 Kg
b) Fraction II = 98 Kg
iv) Water
a) For water-cement ratio of 0.47 quantity of water = 23.5 litres
b) Extra quantity of water to be added for absorption in case of coarse
(0.5−2.2)𝑋150
aggregate, at 2.23 percent by mass = = 2.55 litres
100
c) Extra quantity of water to be added for absorption in case of fine
(0.5−1.0)𝑋150
aggregate, at 1.0 percent by mass = = 0.75 litres
100
d) Actual quantity of water to be added = (23.5+2.55+0.75) = 26.8 litres
v) Actual quantity of sand required = (75 – 0.75) = 74.25 Kg
vi) Actual quantity of coarse aggregate required
a) Fraction I = (42 – 0.77) = 41.23 Kg
b) Fraction II = (98 – 1.78) = 96.22 Kg
Therefore, the actual quantities for different constituents required for the mix
are:
Water : 26.8 litres
Cement : 50 Kg
Sand : 74.25 Kg
Coarse Aggregate: Fraction I : 41.23 Kg
Fraction II : 96.22 Kg
