COLONIAL MENTALITY

Colonial mentality is when a society thinks that foreign products are better than the
products made in their country. This kind of thinking occurs when a society prioritizes foreign
brands rather than supporting local products. Since the Philippines has a rich history of
colonialism, Filipinos who are financially stable take the opportunity to buy foreign products
even if these products cost more than an average class person could afford beyond luxury. This
ambitious act is already constant in the mindsets of Filipinos that imported products are more
valuable than those that are locally made. In which this kind of thinking is not beneficial to the
Filipinos, and of course to its country-Philippines. According to David and Okazaki (2006),
colonial mentality among Filipinos and Filipino Americans are based from their perceptions in
their culture and ethnic practices. People think that their status are below than average so they
focus more on the quality of foreign products. For instance, this mentality depends on how we
see our own culture, lifestyle, and beliefs. Filipinos should have patriotic pride to show their
love, support, sense of identity, and traditionalism to their country so that the Filipinos
themselves won’t criticize their local products. Local companies are having a hard time to gain
support and for them to develop because the people of the country are suffering from deathless
colonial mentality. Filipinos fail to recognize this kind of thinking and fails to reeducate
themselves for their country to grow better.

Colonial mentality is an evident glitch in the society that affects many and in terms of
Structural Functionalism which is a sociological theory that explains why society functions the
way it does by emphasizing on the relationships between the various social institutions that make
up society (e.g., government, law, education, religion, etc.), in other words is the idealism of how
different organizations should work hand in hand to promote the betterment of the state has become
an obstruction for centuries which hindered the possibilities for the community to work hand in
hand for the country to build their nation because their mindsets are already built with the other
nations. Institutionalism in the social sciences is an approach that emphasizes the role
of institutions in the community and is also unfortunately scarred by the issue. A terrifying fact
inside this country is that most of these institutions are not even apprehended by Filipinos and
instead of promoting nationalism, these institutions are only fueling the fervor for colonial
mentality which encourages the Filipino people to cultivate the already huge national problem for
centuries. Yet, the bigger part of the latter that is closely merged to colonial mentality is the
Rational Choice Theory which states that individuals rely on rational calculations to achieve
outcomes that are in line with their personal objectives. This is the problem. Filipinos are not
forced to this mentality rather; they chose to be a part of it.

In an issue that comes in this intensity and density, the solution is only little. It is a classic
saying that states, “Be the Change that you want to see.” To simplify, it is not yet too late to
redirect our priorities and start supporting our fellow citizens in the journey to raise not just our
economy but our fading nationalism.
