 CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

BACKROUND OF THE STUDY

When you're late for something, you're tardy, so tardiness refers to the habit

of being late. Because of their tardiness, some people almost never arrive at work,

school, or other places when they're expected. Tardiness is very annoying for the

people waiting for the tardy person, and too much tardiness at work could get you

fired. Tardiness comes from the Latin word tardus, "slow, sluggish, dull, or

stupid."Sleep is a condition of body and mind such as that which typically recurs

for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is relatively inactive,

the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed, and consciousness practically

suspended. A day and night is composed of 24 hours to be exact. Sleep is a way

which an individual person given a chance to relax and rest its body. As time

passes, the average number of hours of an individual in the society had been

decreasing.

The average number of sleeping in a day is 8 hours to have a good result or

impact to our physical and mental health specially to the students/teenagers. The

lack of sleep/lack of number of time in sleeping create a severe problems not just

physical but also mental status of individual person.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the reasons and effects of tardiness on

the academic performance of the Grade 11 Students In SIAA, Parañaque

Campus.

Specifically, The researchers will seek answers to the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of the following

attributes?

1.1. Age

1.2. Gender

1.3. Strand

2. What are the causes of tardiness or lateness of the respondents in going

to class?

3. What are the effects of being tardy to academic performance of the

respondents?

 4. What forms of interventions can be recommended to address this

problem on tardiness?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The result of the study will merit the following:

1) School Administrator. The result of this study could serve as a baseline

data to improve nor change their system that leads to the reduction of

tardiness and the bad performance of the students.

2) Parents. The result of this study could serve as a baseline data to improve

also the time in their family being responsible in time may also helps in other

like tasks in the house.

3) Students. The result of this study could serve as a baseline data to improve

the time management of the students and also lessen the number of being

late in a week.

4) Future researchers.The result of this study could serve as a baseline data

to improve the knowledge and information that will serve as a foundation or

guide to their research purposes.

This study will discuss the effect of lack of Tardiness to the academic

performance of the grade 11 students of SIAA Senior High School Department

during the first semester of school year 2019-2020

The study will focus on the causes of tardiness and its implications on the

academic performance of SIAA students, Paranaque Campus. It will not include

the students of Tanauan and Calapan campuses.

 Figure 1 shows the conceptual framework of this study. The demographic

profile and the perceptions of the respondents on the causes and effects of being

late will be determined by the researchers. The delivery of the lesson by the

teachers will also be affected. The researchers will utilize survey and interview to

gather the necessary data for the study. These data will be used as basis in

recommending the necessary interventions to solve the tardiness problems.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

To facilitate a good understanding of the present study, the following terms

were defined lexically and operationally:

Tardiness- is the quality of being late. When people don’t show up on time,

they’re guilty of tardiness. When you’re late for something, you’re tardy, so

tardiness refers to the habit of being late.

Sleep habits- is about your behaviors during the day, and especially before

bedtime, can have a major impact on your sleep. They can promote healthy sleep

or contribute to sleeplessness.

 School policy- a set of policies are principles, rules, and guidelines

formulated or adopted by an organization to reach its long-term goals and typically

published in a booklet or other form that is widely accessible.

Academic performance- is what a person has shown and can do in a certain

subject ability; he thinks of it as being internal and hidden until he shows what he

can do with his performance. Performance is external and what people see.

Intervention- action taken to intentionally become involved in a difficult

situation in order to improve it or prevent it from getting worse.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

 This chapter discusses various concepts, principles, and topics gathered

from different readings, unpublished materials, periodicals, journals, and online

resources that correlate with the present study. The following discussions of

topics and findings provide the needed direction in the completion of the study.

RELATED LITERATURE

According to Chiu Mochi (1993) Factors such as Age, Family

Commitments, Change of jobs on the part of parents, Health problems as some

of the factors that may affect late coming of High school students. Okwelle (2003)

As the Factors mentioned earlier learner may develop negative attitudes towards

school resulting in late coming or poor attendance because of non-employment of

school leavers, repetition of class and insecurity. As reported by Emore (2005)

Lateness is common among female students than male students. This may be

due to their activities in there community. As the study continue it pointed that the

major problems that causes High school students being late is the location of their

houses from their respective schools.

 In the other study, Alio (2003) Highlighted social status and educational level of

parent as factors that may influence school attendance and late coming of High

school students. Location from their houses to the school is not only the major

problems that are proven in this study. In the report of Okpukpara and

Chukkwuone (2007) identified the role of gender in child schooling. From the

study, female headed household have higher attendance in schools whereas

educated fathers are more likely to have strong impact in increasing the probability

of child school attendance than mothers. Father serves as a good guide to their

son/s and daughter/s.

SYNTHESIS

According to the related study there are several factors affecting the lateness

or tardiness of the students. coming late is one of the major problem and the

reason is the location or distance of their house to the school that they are

attending. The other major problem is the situation they have been experiencing

in the family like the level of education that parents have or the relationship of the

family in this study it shows that tardiness is of the students are caused by many

factors.

 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter describes the methods and procedures, research design,

research locale, research population and subjects of the study, sampling design

and procedures, research instrument, data gathering procedures, and statistical

treatment of the gathered data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

In order to gather the data that is needed to this research we have

make a questionnaire to survey the following respondets about our research, the

questionnaire ask about the following reasons why they experience tardiness

and how this affects their academic performance

 The study will be conducted at Sapphire International Aviation Academy

located at Old Sucat Road, Sucat, Parañaque City. Sapphire International

Aviation Academy, Paranaque Campus . SIAA was established in 2004 to cater

to the growing worldwide demand for aircraft pilots. With its high literacy rate and

proficiency in the English language, many student pilots from various countries

all over the world- India, Indonesia, Nepal, South Korea,United Arab

Emirates,Kuwait, Egypt, Nigeria- have been coming to the Philippines to enroll in

aviation courses. SIAA also offers courses on Tourism – a 4-year course in B.S.

Travel Management and a two-year Associate Course in Tourism. The newest

addition to the course offerings is the Senior High School (Grades 11 and 12) with

the following strands:

Grade 11- STEM Grade 11-ICT

Grade 11-HE Grade 11-ABM

Grade 12-HUMMS Grade 12-STEM

Grade 12-ABM Grade 12-ICT

POPULATION AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUES

The population of Grade 11 SIAA students of Paranaque Campus is 135 students

that consist of Science Technology Engineering Mathematics, Accountancy

Business Management.

Table 1 presents the distribution of participants. Due to the small number of

population, the researchers will include everyone in the study.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The instrument that we have used to conduct the research and also to

gather the following data that is needed from the respondents is through proving

a survey questionnaire.

The questionnaire is divided into three parts:

We the researchers wrote a letter to the Academy Director/President

to request permission to conduct survey during the free time of the respondents,

informed consent will also be provided to the students, the participants will be

informed of the research objectives and outcomes, the respondents will be

asked to sign the Informed Consent signifying their voluntary participation in this

project.

 We the researchers will personally distribute and retrieved the

questionnaires from the respondents, the responses of the respondents will be

encoded by the researchers and results will be presented in tabular forms.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The respondents to the questionnaire will be analyzed and interpreted in

 2.To answer Problem 2 and 3, the mean of the participant’s perception
will be computed. The weighted mean will be used to get the average score ob
the ratings of the participants.

The following scale is based in our questionnaire ,Each variable will

interpretation will be applied in assessing the given indicators:

3 = Somewhat Agree

2 = Somewhat Disagree

1 = Strongly Disagree.

The mean of weighted frequencies will be interpreted along the

1.00 – 1.74 - Strongly Disagree (SDA)

1.75 – 2.49 - Disagree (DA)

2.50 – 3.24 - Agree (A)

3.25 – 4.00 - Strongly Agree (SA)

1. To answer Problem No.4, F-test through one-way ANOVA, between groups

2. To answer Problem no 5, Pearson’s Coefficient of Correlation will be used to

determine the degree of relationships between the service quality and

passenger satisfaction.

1.96, at 0.05 level of significance, using Appendix C of (cite statistics book with

All statistical tests will utilize the 0.5 level of significance in the rejection

or acceptance of the null hypothesis.
