II RATIONALE:

At present the Municipality of Maco is focusing on its Ecotourism Development as this

is considered an important economic activity with its natural tourism sites- the Lake Leonard in
Barangay New Leyte, Mainit Hot Spring in Barangay Mainit, Tagmanakao waterfalls and clean rivers in
Panibasan and Gubatan, plus its cool climate and scenic view of its mountains and mining areas in New
Leyte, Masara, New Barili and surrounding barangays.

Recently, tourism in Maco has accelerated with the influx of tourists visiting the natural
steaming waterfall of Sulfuric Hot Spring in barangay Mainit and Lake Leonard in barangay New Leyte, a
200 hectare crater- lake of an active volcano named Mt. Leonard Kniazeff.

The LGU is now facing the challenge on how to develop, manage and maintain these
eco-tourism sites in a manner that is socially responsive and environmentally sustainable. Moreover, the
balance between the demands of the tourists and local constituents while maintaining the natural scenic
attraction, ensuring safety and prevention of environmental degradation.
