Compared with 2015, the consumption of paper in Vietnam in 2016 reached 3.6 million tonnes, up
1.5%; paper production reached 2 million tonnes, up 5.6%; Imports amount to 1.7 million tonnes,
down 3.2% and exports stayed unchanged to 158,000 tonnes.
From 2016, Vietnam no longer produces newsprint because of prolonged losses. Printing & writing
paper production was down 1.9%, but production of packaging paper increased 8.2% and tissue
production increased 11.5% compared to previous year.
Compared with 2015~ imports of all paper grades fell, excluding paper for packaging (up 5.9%),
tissue paper (up 62.3%) and other paper.
Exports of paper compared to 2015 were almost unchanged, although exports of printing & writing
paper and tissue paper increased, but joss paper exports declined.

As Vietnam does not produce coated paper, imports of coated paper (for printing and boxing) in
2016 reached 675,542 tonnes, accounting for 40% ofthe total amount of imported containerboard.
Importing kraftliner, paper for cement bag reduces, but imports testliner and flutting medium paper
increased.
In 2016, China continues to hold the leading position among paper exporters in Vietnam with a
volume of 424,000 tonnes, accounting for 24.8% of the total imported paper in Vietnam; followed
by Taiwan (16.0%), Thailand (14.6%), Indonesia (13.2%), South Korea (13.2%), Japan (10.8%) .

The capacity of packaging paper in 2016 in Vietnam is 1.670.000 tonnes/year, with the largest
machine with the capacity of280,000 tonnes/year (1 machine), followed by the 141,600 tonnes/year
machine (1 machine). The remaining capacites are 100,000 tonnes/y (2 machines); 70,000
tonnes/year; 50,000 tonnes/year and many smaller capacity machines (up to 10,000 tonnes/year).
In 2017, new capacity of 1.5 million tonnes/yr will bring the total packaging paper capacity to 3.2
million tonnes/yr, ,.Qoubling in 2016 with the largest machine 500,000 tonnes/yr of Chengyang
Paper Mill Co., L~d .. [Belonging to Nine Dragons Paper (Holdings)].

By 2020, the capacity of paper for packaging has increased 2.4 times compared to 2016, 1.5 times
that of2017. •
This data is based on publicly available investment projects. The following years may have other
projects annouced and so the capacity of packaging paper in 2020 may be over 4 million tonnes and
Vietnam may be second only to Indonesia in paper production in Southeast Asia.
