It is very well known that the curve of civility in our country, maybe the whole world, has been in a downward
trajectory of late. The other side of that is that rudeness and harshness have been on the rise. There are no doubt
many reasons for this. Perhaps it indicates a restlessness or anxiety among us, an uneasiness about the present and
a fear about the future. Perhaps it is because we see the lack of civility modeled by our leaders and by characters on
television who generate laughter by their rudeness. Perhaps we have lost touch with whatever grounded us with an
understanding that we ought, needed, to treat others with respect. However it has happened it is unfortunate, and it
adds to the restlessness, anxiety, and fear many of us experience.
I have no prescriptions for how this ought to be changed on national or worldwide levels. Those are issues far too big
for me to handle and if I actually did know the answers I probably ought to find another way to get them across than
a church newsletter article. Perhaps, though, we can make an impact on our individual worlds by looking at how we
relate to other people.
There seems to be some admiration for people who express their feelings openly and frankly, who “tell it like it is.”
That can be helpful and constructive, depending on the situation, but it can also demonstrate disregard for the
feelings of others. That, perhaps, is the crux of the whole matter. How do we feel about others? Do their well-beings,
their feelings, matter to us? I think, as Christians, as people called upon to love our neighbors as ourselves, they
ought to matter to us. Even if we do not have great felt concerns about the feelings of others, we ought to act as if
they are important. I recently came across a way to do that. It was expressed this way: “Before you speak, let your
words pass through three gates. 1.) Is it true? 2.) Is it necessary? 3.) Is it kind?”
The last gate, I think, is the most crucial one. If we feel the need to be kind it will guide us through and enhance all
the relationships of our lives. When I perform wedding ceremonies I am usually expected to offer words of wisdom to
the newly married couple. The advice I most often give is usually very simple - “Be kind.” It is the most helpful
guidance I know how to give, because kindness alone will help them through many of the difficulties they might face
in their married lives.
There is also a personal pay-off when we are kind. When I think of the times I have been rude or less than kind, I feel
less than satisfied with myself. When we are kind to others it actually helps us feel more at peace in the world.
In a world experiencing the lack of civility ours experiences these days there is a great need for people to simply be
kind to one another. A saying, sometimes attributed to Plato, tells us, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a
hard battle.” Whoever first said it, it is advice we all ought to take to heart. If we so we just might change the world.
Our world, anyway.
Be kind. Please. The world needs it. We need it. You need it.
Fondly,
Mark

Preschool News
The new school year is off to a great start. We currently have 17, 3 - 5 year olds in our
program. We started out the year exploring and getting familiar with the classroom. We
introduced the centers and how to correctly use them. We also learned about our
classroom rules, red and green choices and problem solving.
We spent a week learning all about our friends. The kids brought in All About Me Bags.
Each bag contained 5 to 7 of the kid’s favorite items to share with their friends. We
talked about our body parts and drew self portraits to the Mat Man song.
We finished up the month learning about apples and celebrating Johnny Appleseed. We
learned about the parts of an apple as well as the life cycle of an apple. We tasted red,
yellow, and green apples and picked our favorite. We ate lots of yummy apple treats at
snack time,
In addition to learning about school, rules, our friends and apples, we started working
on and assessing our basic skills such as letter recognition, numbers, counting, colors,
shapes, etc.
