(W .622 (P /P - P) ) : Air Conditioning and Ventilation
(W .622 (P /P - P) ) : Air Conditioning and Ventilation
- Moist Air is a binary mixture of Dry Air and a water vapor (saturated & unsaturated).
- Dry Air is the non-condensing components of the mixture, mainly nitrogen and the oxygen.
- Vapor is the non-condensable component if the mixture, the water vapor or steam which may
exist in a saturated or superheated state.
P m = P a + Pv
Where:
Pm = total mixture pressure (atmospheric pressure)
Pa = partial pressure exerted by dry air
Pv = partial pressure exerted by vapor
Humidity Ratio (moisture content, mixing ratio or the specific humidity) W is the ratio of the mass
of water vapor to the mass of dry air [W = .622 (Pv/Pt-Pv)]
P1) Compute the W of air at 65% RH and 34ºC when the barometric pressure is 101.3 KPa.
- Specific Enthalpy h of a mixture of dry air and water vapor is the sum of the enthalpy of the dry
air and the enthalpy of the water vapor (h = cp t + W hg)
where: cp = specific heat of dry air at constant temp. = 1.0062 kJ/Kg. K (approx.)
hg = enthalpy of saturated steam at temp, kJ/kg
- Specific Volume v is the number of cubic meters of mixture per kilogram of dry air
(v = RT/Pa = Ra Ta/Pm-Pv)
P3) What is the specific volume of an air-vapor mixture at 30ºC and a relative humidity of 40% at 101.3 kPa
pressure?
- Wet bulb depression is the difference between the readings of the wet and dry bulb
temperatures.
- Dew point temperature tw is the saturation temp corresponding to the actual partial pressure
of the steam in air or at which condensation of moisture begins when the air is cooled at
constant pressure.
- Degree of Saturation DOS is the ratio of the air humidity ratio W to the humidity ratio Ws of
the saturated air at the same temperature.
P4) A mixture of dry air and water vapor is at a temperature if 21ºC under pressure of 101.3 kPa. The dew
point temperature is 15ºC. Find (a) partial pressure of water vapor, (b) relative humidity, (c) humidity
ratio, (d) enthalpy, (e) specific volume and (f) degree of saturation
