One Piece Pattern (Flat Back)

Exercise #2

Name: Makiramdam, Rafael Christian A. Date Performed: 11/21/2018

Student Number: 2013105560 Date Submitted: 11/28/2018

Engr. RJ Lawrence Tiu

Instructor
Objectives
1. To be able to construct a flat back pattern.
2. To be familiarize with basic hand tools.
3. To enhance the creativity and technical knowledge of the students in woodworking practice.
4. To test the student’s comprehension and skills in making a one piece pattern (flatback).
List of Materials

1. Backsaw

Used to cut wood in straight

2. Bench vise

Used to hold your workpiece

3. Working table

This is where you work and place your materials when working
4. File

It is used to scrape or remove excess wood and to fine some parts of the wood.
5. Compass saw

It is used to cut part or the wood that has small hole or diameter.
6. Kiln dried wood

This is the wood that is used to shape into something.

7. Steel Brush

It is used to remove wood dust in files to bring back its sharpness.

8. Try Square

It is used to measure when working.

9. Sand Paper

It is used to fine wood and polish.

10. Pencil

It is used to mark the work piece for easy and precise cutting.
Procedures
1. Draw a flat back figure

2. Get a piece of wood and mark all the parts you should cut

3. Place it in a bench vise

4. Using the back saw, cut the sides of the wood.

5. Using the Drill Press, two holes in the center part of the wood.

6. Using the compass saw, cut the inside of the wood starting from the hole.

7. When done cutting, use the files to fine all the edges from inside to outside

8. Taper all the edges.

9. Use sand paper to smoothen all the sides and the whole work piece.
Questions and Answers
1. What are the different types of patterns?
- Single piece pattern
Split piece pattern
loose piece pattern
Gated pattern
Match pattern
Sweep pattern
Cope and drag pattern
Skeleton pattern
Shell pattern
Follow board pattern
2. Is knowledge of engineering significant in pattern making? Why?
- Yes, because this knowledge will help us understand the right way of doing things.
3. What is a quality of a good pattern?
- Patterns used in sand casting may be made of wood, metal, plastics or other materials. Patterns
are made to exacting standards of construction, so that they can last for a reasonable length of
time, according to the quality grade of the pattern being built, and so that they will repeatably
provide a dimensionally acceptable casting.
4. What is the purpose of a working drawing?
- To prepare the real figure. It is the reference of the finished product.
5. What properties of wood that makes it a good material for pattern making?
- Inexpensive, low weight, easy to shape.
6. What other materials can be used as a pattern material?
- Wood, Metal, Plastic, Plaster

7. What kind of wood is suitable for pattern making?

- Mahogany
8. Why should the pattern made to be bigger that the finished product?
- The material which undergo shrinkage during solidification and contract further on cooling
to room temperature. To compensate this, the pattern is made larger than the required
casting. This extra size is given on the pattern for metal shrinkage is called shrinkage
allowance.
9. Why is there a need to incline a little bit the side of the pattern?
- to aid in the removal of the pattern from the molding media

10. What are the advantages of a metal pattern?

- Excellent wearing properties. High standard of accuracy and stability. Suitable for high-
volume production and shell molding. CAD/CAM improvements are greatly reducing cost
and lead time requirements.
Conclusion
- Flat back is a one piece pattern that is created using different wood working hand tools like
backsaw for cutting sides, compass saw for cutting inside, files for fining the edges, to create
a 1 piece pattern having 1 piece of wood.
