ASSIGNMENT 01
DUE: MONDAY, 07 OCTOBER 2019, 09:50 AM
INSTRUCTIONS:

 Submit in hard copy on properly stapled A4 sheets.

 Mention your Name, Registration Number, Section, and Course clearly on the first page.
 Late assignments will NOT be entertained.
 Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated.

Note: You may use graph sheets if you wish. However, there is no compulsion.

1. Consider the following objective function for a linear programming model:

Maximize 𝑍 = 2𝑥1 + 3𝑥2

a. Draw a graph that shows the corresponding objective function lines for
𝑍 = 6, 𝑍 = 12, and 𝑍 = 18
b. Find the slope-intercept form of the equation for each of these three objective function lines.
Compare the slope for these three lines. Also compare the intercept with the 𝑥2 axis. Present
your comparison in a tabular form.

2. Use the graphical method to solve the following problem:

Minimize 𝑍 = 15𝑥1 + 20𝑥2 ,

subject to

𝑥1 + 2𝑥2 ≥ 15
2𝑥1 − 3𝑥2 ≤ 6
𝑥1 + 𝑥2 ≥ 6
and

𝑥1 ≥ 0, 𝑥2 ≥ 0

3. Ralph Edmund loves steaks and potatoes. Therefore, he has decided to go on a steady diet of only
these two foods (plus some liquids and vitamin supplements) for all his meals. Ralph realizes that
this isn’t the healthiest diet, so he wants to make sure that he eats the right quantities of the two
foods to satisfy some key nutritional requirements. He has obtained the nutritional and cost
information shown at the top of the next column.

Ralph wishes to determine the number of daily servings (may be fractional) of steak and potatoes
that will meet these requirements at a minimum cost.
CS-2420 OPERATIONS RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT 01

a. Formulate the linear programming model for this problem.

b. Use the graphical method to solve this model.

4. Alumco manufactures aluminum sheets and aluminum bars. The maximum production capacity is
estimated at either 800 sheets or 600 bars per day. The maximum daily demand is 550 sheets and
560 bars. The profit per ton is $40 per sheet and $35 per bar. Determine the optimal daily
production mix.

5. Al Ferris has $60,000 that he wishes to invest now in order to use the accumulation for purchasing
a retirement annuity in 5 years. After consulting with his financial adviser, he has been offered four
types of fixed-income investments, which we will label as investments A, B, C, D.

Investments A and B are available at the beginning of each of the next 5 years (call them years 1 to
5). Each dollar invested in A at the beginning of a year returns $1.40 (a profit of $0.40) 2 years later
(in time for immediate reinvestment). Each dollar invested in B at the beginning of a year returns
$1.70 three years later.

Investments C and D will each be available at one time in the future. Each dollar invested in C at the
beginning of year 2 returns $1.90 at the end of year 5. Each dollar invested in D at the beginning of
year 5 returns $1.30 at the end of year 5.

Al wishes to know which investment plan maximizes the amount of money that can be
accumulated by the beginning of year 6.

a. All the functional constraints for this problem can be expressed as equality constraints. To do
this, let 𝐴𝑡 , 𝐵𝑡 , 𝐶𝑡 , and 𝐷𝑡 be the amount invested in investment A, B, C, and D, respectively, at
the beginning of year 𝑡 for each 𝑡 where the investment is available and will mature by the end
of year 5. Also let 𝑅𝑡 be the number of available dollars not invested at the beginning of year 𝑡
(and so available for investment in a later year). Thus, the amount invested at the beginning of
year 𝑡 plus 𝑅𝑡 must equal the number of dollars available for investment at that time. Write
such an equation in terms of the relevant variables above for the beginning of each of the 5
years to obtain the five functional constraints for this problem.
b. Formulate a complete linear programming model for this problem.
