REFLECTON PAPER

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUN

BY;KHALED HOSSEINI
When I read A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, it helped me to see through the eyes of another culture.
The book itself was very well written and had me wanting to read more, but it affected me on a deeper level as well. It is
rare that a book will not only entertain me, but also educate me in the culture of a very different land. Not only was I
reading the book, hours at a time, to see just what happens to Mariam and Laila, I was also reading to see more of the
horrors that happen in our real world as well. So I applaud Khaled Hosseini for creating such a fantastic piece of literature
that both enthralled me and educated me. When I read A Thousand Splendid Suns, I was shocked at the treatment of the
people by the government, I was never able to grasp how so the people who find these actions unjust or even odd in the
slightest are in the minority over there. Near the beginning, I felt as though this was an extreme example; that it was
dramatized to sell better, but as I read more and more, I realized that this abuse and oppression are parts of everyday life
in Afghanistan.

All in all, I feel that the Afghanistan unit taught me lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. This is a
unit that has affected me on a much deeper than most other things I have learned in other classes. My only gripe with this
unit has just been how time consuming it has been. I personally feel that we spent too much time looking at everything in
too much detail when just reading the book and gaining background information as a class would have been enough.
Overall, I have really enjoyed the unit, the book, and my newfound cultural lens.
