1. Introduction

Name of the Project: MAMSHA AL SAADIYAT ISLAND, Abu Dhabi Package-CO2 Main
Contract Works.
Location: Saadiyat Island – Sector SDN1, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

San Jose Pivot San Jose is involved in the construction of retails and residential project at
Mamsha Al Saadiyat Development on Al Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE. The project is
being built for the owner, ALDAR PROPERTIES PJSC with RTKL an Arcardis Company as
Employer’s Representative.

2. Campaign Overview

As instructed by ALDAR EHS and with RTKL collaboration San Jose Pivot San Jose initiated
a Summer Safety campaign on 26 June 2018 for the project employees aiming to provide
awareness on the heat related hazards and the mitigation measures to be followed to
prevent ill-health when working during the summer period.

San Jose Pivot San Jose issued an official invitation to the ADM EHS delegates, the project
owner ALDAR & RTKL Senior Management requesting their participation in the Campaign.

ADM EHS representatives, Mr. Mazzen Abu Faisal Hamra ALDAR HSE Vice President, Mr.
Sami Samara ALDAR Project Director, Mr. Andrew Murphy Arcadis Project Director, Mr.
Robert Pereira – Arcadis HSE Manager, Mr. Carlos Rivera – San Jose Pivot San Jose
Project Director and Mr. AbuBaker – San Jose Pivot San Jose Project HSE Manager with
other project key personnel attended the campaign and delivered subject related talks.

3. Summary

For the summer period, a “Safety in heat”- heat illness prevention campaign was conducted
at MAMSHA AL SAADIYAT Project aiming to reduce probable heat-related illness to the
operational staff and anticipated visiting personnel during the summer period. The campaign
strategy involved: - 1). Educate/train all operatives and staff on the need to prevent identify
health hazards whilst working during high temperature and humid conditions (between June
2018 & Sep 2018). 2) develop an awareness that observes heat illnesses as a serious health
issue which requires proactive actions at the workplace; and 3) motivate the worker morale
by demonstrating active commitment by the project top management towards the safety,
health and wellbeing of operatives during the summer working period. The campaign was
targeted to provide unambiguous communication of required preventative measures to all
operatives and staff involved in the project.

The campaign’s idea was a consequent from ABUDHABI OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND
HEALTH CENTER-OSHAD recommendation to the employers to raise awareness on
“SAFETY IN HEAT” amongst the project employees and involved stakeholders.

3.1. The programme highlights

 ADM & OSHAD delegates, vice president HSE ALDAR, Project Director Arcadis,
Project Director SPSMJV effectively delivered the subject related message which
has boosted the project employees morale for taking care of themselves and
fellowmen.
 Proper personal drinking water bottles were distributed to the operatives by the
delegates to encourage them to consume enough drinking water. RTKL
communicated the risk of using mineral water bottles and carbonated beverage
containers as drinking water cans on site, i.e., the high probability of accidental
consumption/intake of chemicals such as thinners stored in similar kind of containers
might lead to serious ill-health/injuries and as a support to San Jose Pivot San Jose
Environmental Campaign on "Reduce Plastic Waste".
 Program educational materials (banners & posters) from AD OSHAD were posted
at strategic locations on site, related signages were displayed at workers welfare
areas and other prominent locations, safety in heat videos were screened at
employees’ project rest shelter 1 & 2.
 San Jose Pivot San Jose ensured an adequate supply of electrolytes, cold water,
ice cubes, designated rest areas with AC units, provision of mist fans and constant
supervision of works by staff.
 Safety in heat program specific toolbox talks were delivered to all operatives
including subcontracting staff by San Jose Pivot San Jose.
 Safety in heat program specific Mass Toolbox Talks were completed on the project
covering 3 Building Plots and Site Offices.
 Multilinguistic in-house training material were developed and delivered to the
operatives, presentation slides and leaflets communicated to the staff, subject-
related multilinguistic videos screened including emergency preparedness and
response.
 Implementation of Heat stress help desk, PTW in heat system, random health
surveillance, heat stress inspection checklist, TWL monitoring, flag communication
system, Provision of personnel TWL monitoring devices and dehydration test by the
clinic nurse.

4. Conclusion

San Jose Pivot San Jose 2018 safety in heat Campaign represents a significant step
towards ensuring that the SPSMJV operatives do not suffer or exposed to any serious case
of heat-related illness during the operations in the summer periods.
San Jose Pivot San Jose has implemented the summer arrangements as per the project
Summer Safety Plan and shall ensure maintenance of the arrangements, constant
monitoring of weather condition and swift communication of hazardous environmental
conditions to the project staff.
Project employees demonstrated the significance of self-reporting of heat illness signs/
behaviours following the campaign. San Jose Pivot San Jose has installed suggestion boxes
at various locations and is inviting employees representatives for weekly HSE meetings to
