2. Competency
After having the course, students are expected to:

• Demonstrate a critical understanding of the actors, issues and debates that concern
international relations today and how they shape the foreign policy decisions of states.
• demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical approaches to international relations
and are able to test the theories using empirical data.
• develop their capacity for critically engaging with the provided information from texts and other
sources of information
• be able to conduct independent research;
• prepare and structure an argumentative essay that is cogent and persuasive;

3. Description of Subject:
This course introduces students to the broad study of international relations and will focus on various
themes and debates in the arena of contemporary global affairs. Issues such as the changing nature of
conflicts, human rights, the impacts of globalisation, regional integration, the growing role of non-state
actors and variety of other issues will be examined in this course. The course will also introduce students
to a variety of theoretical approaches to understanding these issues and will also emphasize case-study
analysis to test and evaluate competing theoretical approaches. The course will heavily rely on extensive
classroom discussions concerning various topics as many of these topics are subject to ongoing debate
and must be discussed as a means of understanding these issues from all sides. This is done in hope
having the students to make sense of what is unfolding in global affairs. These topics through in-class
presentations, exercises discussions (both face-to-f a c e ), readings (from both text and on-line sources),
exercises (both individual and group-based), and a variety of graded assignments and tests.

4. Learning Approach

a) Absence maximum : 25%

• Working in groups of 3.
• Paper and presentation are required
• Paper no longer than 2000 ((±10%) words, 1.5 space
• Presentation 30 mins, Q and A 15 mins
• Hard copy of the paper submitted on the day of the presentation.
• No late-submission accepted.
• Each group may submit a hard or soft copy of their draft before being finalized
• The topic chosen by the students.

9. Final Examination
Final examination worth 60 points. It is designed to examine students’ understanding and sharpen
their critical thinking as well. Model of exam:
a) Closed book
b) Materials from week 1-13
c) Theoretical understanding and problem sample/case study.
