IEP Team Meeting Reflections

On Thursday, November 21st, 2019 I was able to attend an IEP meeting for a 5th grade

student. The people who were present for this meeting were the Special Education teacher, the

Social Worker, the Speech Pathologist, the General Education teacher, and the Special

Education teacher for the school the student would be transferring to next year. We met in a

conference room in the school’s office space.

This meeting was very casual since almost everyone has worked closely together with

this student. The student was diagnosed under Speech and Language, so the Speech

Pathologist did a lot of the leading for this meeting. To begin, there was a lot of describing who

the student is and strengths for the new special education teacher. Then, it went into discussing

more current issues. This part included all of the staff members who currently work with this

student. The general education teacher did a lot of describing how this student acts in class,

which helped the others to see where new problems could lie.

The last part of this meeting discussed if the student needed to be reevaluated. The

speech pathologist mentioned that she could no longer service this student, but that he still

needed services of some sort. The special education teacher and social worker then included

their recent observations of the student and discussed other potential options for him. The

meeting concluded with getting a team together to test this student for other potential

disabilities.
