THE TEACHER ADVISORY PROGRAM

WHAT IS TEACHER ADVISORY PROGRAM?

 is an innovative developmental approach to counseling that directly involves teachers as

advisors to 18 to 20 students, with whom they meet both individually and in group
sessions.
 It is an arrangement whereby one adult and a small group of students have an
opportunity to interact on a scheduled basis in order to provide a caring environment for
academic guidance and support, everyday administrative details, recognition, and
activities to promote citizenship.”
 A comprehensive plan to provide students and parents with information to make
decisions about education and work.
 Includes self-awareness, education and career planning, puts it in a managed time
frame.
 Encourages students to make a career/educational goal which will entice them to remain
in school.
 It insures consistent curriculum planning for all students.
 Improves relation between school, community, business/industry, as well as parents.
 Provides opportunity for shared responsibility for career and education development
rather than one person being solely responsible (team approach)
 Helps them establish a career cluster.

PURPOSE OF ADVISORY PROGRAM

 Is to establish a relationship of caring and understanding between at least one adult and
every student.
 Assist students in planning and preparing for their future.
 To advise students about academic decisions and monitor academic achievement
 To provide developmental guidance (both formal and informal)
 To foster communication between the home and school and among members of the
school community
 To encourage supportive peer relationships and practice conflict resolution
 To promote an awareness of diversity and tolerance
 To undertake community service both within and outside the school
 To facilitate community governance and conversations
 To prepare students for life transitions including career development and post-
secondary opportunities
 To promote character development and explore moral dilemmas
 To explore the process of group development and have fun
 The intention of the advisory group concept is to personalize the schooling experience
for adolescents. By dint of its non- disciplinary nature (there is no subject curriculum),
its size (generally smaller than a regular class), and its continuity over years, the
advisory group is intended to give students the opportunity to know and be known by a
teacher and a group of peers in a way that may not occur naturally in most classrooms,
where contact is brief and the felt need to cover the k curriculum may interfere with
meeting more
FIVE TIPS FOR TEACHING ADVISORY CLASSES AT YOUR SCHOOL

Research shows that when students have a meaningful relationship with an adult at
school, they are more likely to succeed academically—but traditional academic learning in high
school often leaves little time to make these connections.
 Use advisory to intentionally foster a school culture
 Give advisers strong support from the school
 Create a safe and vulnerable environment

 Differentiate advisory curricula from normal schoolwork

 Have a plan, but be flexible and adaptable

THE TEACHER-ADVISORS: WHO ARE THEY?

 The advisor is a teacher who promotes and monitors individual students' educational
and developmental experiences as they progress through school, and acts as both a
coordinator/liaison with other teachers and with parents, and as an advocate for the
students in her/his advisory group.
 an affective educational program designed to focus on the social, emotional, physical,
intellectual, psychological, and ethical development of students; a program providing a
structured time during which special activities are designed and implemented to help
adolescents find ways to fulfill their identified needs; intended to provide consistent,
caring, and continuous adult guidance at school through the organization of a supportive
and stable peer group that meets regularly under the guidance of a teacher serving as
advisor.” (Forte & Schurr, 1993, p.117)
 A comprehensive plan to provide students and parents with information to make
decisions about education and work.

WHAT ATTITUDES AND SKILLS ARE REQUIRED BY THE ADVISOR ROLE?

 One guide suggests that an advisor is someone who accepts the students for what they
are, knows what the school has to offer, helps students match their needs with the
school's offerings, and helps the school change to accommodate student needs.
 As well, the advisor is someone who really listens to students, and is skilled in
facilitating open discussion.
SUCCESSFUL ADVISERS

 are said to be characterized by their willingness to: .

 see the student's point of view .
 respond to students' feelings .
 personalize the education experience .
 facilitate a class discussion where students listen and share ideas .
 develop a helping relationship with students and parents .
 model interpersonal and communication skills
