Chernobyl

This year, on 6th of May 2019, HBO lunched Chernobyl, a mini series filmed in a
cinematic way, which quiqly became of the most apreciated series of the year. But how is this
possible and where does this success came from?
First of all, for those who don’t know what happened at Chernobyl, on the night of 26
of April 1986,a nuclear accident occured at the No. 4 nuclear reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear
Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukraine. It is considered the worst
nuclear disaster in history Personally I think that a big part for this enormous succes ( it was
ranked with 9.4 on Imdb and it entered on the list of the 25th best series of all time) owns to
the fact that it seems relatable, realistic. Watching this mini series, you can almost feel the
pain, the saddness of the characters. Moreover it’s for sure a great oportunity for the younger
audience or for people who didn’t know many things about Chernobyl to find out what really
happened in that fatidic night which changed the whole world. You can easily observe a
perfect combination of screw-ups and covers-ups which leds to a catastrophe. This movie has
something for erybody: drama, history, thriller and even horror. God and Devil are both here,
the mood is grey, apocalyptic. The fact that all happened because of the iresponsability of
human being it’s scary and terryfing both at the same time.
One important thing to keep in mind while watching this TV drama it’s that not all
you’ll see it’s real, a lot of things are made up, but it doesn’t really matter, because it offers an
overview of the Soviet Union and its problems. The worst nuclear disaster in history killed 30
people immediately but many, many more months and years after.
The producers of the series don’t sanitise the event, but they even go a little too far, all
for one reason: to have a big impact on the viewer. But there’s no question there is plenty of
similitudes in the show: the control room is faithfully recreated, the rooftop scene in which
conscripts have just few seconds to toss the radioactive material to the ground. Also, many of
the characters are real: the story of Ludmilla Ignanetniko really existed and it was chosen to
be presented in the series to show how iresponsability could affect the life of the families even
months after. The scintist Valery Lagasov became a member of gouverment commission
created to investigate the causes of Chernobyl. He saved many lives by ordering the
immediate evacuation of the entire population of the city of Pripyat. On April 27, 1988, one
day after the second anniversary of the accident - and one day before he was due to announce
his results of the investigation into the causes of the disaster - Legasov took his own life.
Firefighter Vasil Ihnacienka, who was just 25 when he died of radiation poisoning after being
one of the first to respond to the fire at the Chernobyl plant on April 26.
In the conclusion, I wouldn’t say that this series presents only the negative side of
people or events. Quite the opposite: it shows a hopeful side also because many people,
without being named can be credited for saving the lives of milions of people.
