Vocabulary
please don't translate words that
you don't understand into your
language!
Try googling them first and look
at the images - that would help
you memorize them and start
thinking in English!

Advent calendar
a calendar used to countdown
to Christmas Day. Each day you
will get a small gift (chocolate,
toys, pocket money, etc.)

Candy cane
a cylindrical stick of red and
white striped candy resembling
a walking stick
Chin-chin
a phrase used to express good
wishes before drinking

Christmas lights
small white or differently
coloured electric lights spaced
evenly along a cable and used
for decoration

Countdown
the action of counting seconds
backwards to zero, for example
before New Year

Eggnog

a traditional Christmas alcoholic


drink made by mixing beer,
wine, etc. with eggs and milk
Festive
having or producing happy and
enjoyable feelings suitable for a
festival or other special occasion

Fireworks
a small explosive that produces bright
colors that people use at celebrations

Hangover
the headache and sick feeling that
you have the day after drinking too
much alcohol

Gingerbread
a type of cookie/biscuit made of
ginger, nutmeg or cinnamon and
sweetened with honey or sugar
Holly
a bush or small tree with hard
shiny leaves with sharp points
and bright red berries in winter,
often used as a decoration at
Christmas

Ice flowers
formations of ice crystals on the
surface of a window when the
temperature outside is below
zero

Icicle
a pointed piece of ice that is
formed when water freezes as it
falls down from something such
as a roof
Mistletoe
a plant that is used as a Christmas
decoration. It is traditional to kiss
someone when you are both under it

Ornament
a thing that is used to make
something look more attractive but
usually has not practical purpose.
Christmas trees are decorated with
ornaments

New Year’s
resolution
a promise to do something or to
change something during the
following year
Snowflake
a small soft piece of frozen water
that falls from the sky as snow

Stocking
a long sock that is hung up by
children on Christmas Eve so
that Santa Claus can fill it with
small gifts
Tinsel
a form of decoration consisting
of thin strips of shiny metal foil
attached to a long thread

Tree topper
a decorative ornament placed on
the top (or "crown") of a
Christmas tree
Wreath
an arrangement of flowers
and leaves fastened to form a
ring. They are used for
decoration
