Running Head: CLASSROOM ARRANGEMENT ASSIGNMENT 2

List and Rationale

 Space between tables so there is plenty of room for the student with the wheel chair to

move around the classroom and for easy flow of stations. Students will use different

paths to switch tables.

 There will be a reading corner for free reading time. There is enough comfy seating for

each student. It will also serve as a comfy calming corner for the student with Autism

who can become overstimulated.

 On the left there will be cubbies to hang up backpacks and jackets and allow for personal

items.

 Above the shelves in the front of the room there will be a smart board in front of the

circle rug and white boards.

 The art table is in the back by the sink along with being the biggest table so that the

students have space to be creative.

 Science table is also by the sink in case of messy science experiments.

 Math and English tables

 Morning work table where students will have individualized morning work.

 All of the different tables are used for different purposes so students know what to

expect. Also, only half the students will be at a table at once, except the morning work

table, so that there is no overcrowding. There will be two tables in use at a time that after

a time the students will switch stations.

 The circle rug is for morning meeting time and class story time.

 There is a desk for students who feel the need to have their own space especially for the

student with autism who may want to take a break at the desk or in the calming corner.

 Important things that are used daily will be on top of the student height shelves.

 On the toy shelf the toys that the student with the wheelchair likes will be on the top shelf

for easy reach.

 There is storage space that will mainly be used for teacher use to grab things for the class.

 Computer for teacher use mainly for the smart board. In the storage area by the teacher’s

desk there would be ipads for individual students’ use.

 Book stand would feature the book of the week, when story time and morning meeting

time are not in session the book stand is moved out of the way.

 The shelves will be filled with stuff related to the expected academics happening in the

area. The calming corner/reading corner will have books and small sensory toys. By the

sink there will be arts and crafts, science, and math supplies for student use. The front

would have morning meeting supplies and English supplies that students would be able to

use during free time. There would also be toys on the front shelves.

 The teacher desk for teacher use only and students would learn they are not allowed to go

behind the teacher’s desk.

 On the tables and floors there may if needed be tape to remind students about personal

space.

The classroom setting, I decided to create is a 2nd grade special education classroom with

5 students.

For the student who will be in a wheelchair there will be plenty of room for her to move

around the classroom. At each table there is open spots for her wheelchair to go. During free

time the toys and items she likes to play will be on the top shelves for easy reach. The student

with autism will have a separate desk for his use and a comfy reading corner or calming corner

for when he feels overcrowded and when he needs a break. The room will be organized with

everything labeled neatly so that student will see what they are doing and will be less distracted

(Dewitz, 2014).

The schedule for students is morning work table, morning meeting, math/ELA, and then

Science/arts and crafts. The reason for each table being a different subject is so that students can

develop expectations and a proper mind-set for what they are about to do. (Rohrer & Samson,

2014). The round tables are so that the teacher or paraeducator can easily help all students at the

same time. AT the tables the teacher teaches a topic while the paraeducator helps with review of

a topic at the other subject table the arts and crafts table is bigger so that students have room to

be creative. There is free reading time and free time mixed in during the day and at the reading

corner there are enough comfy chairs for everyone to have a comfy seat.

The students will have individual ipads to help with their learning or for free time. When

they are not in use they will be in the storage cabinet by the teacher’s desk. Morning meeting

time will be where students go over days of the week, months, weather, etc. during free time

students can grab items off any shelves. Shelves are students’ heights so we can always see the

students and for student easy reach.
