The design traffic in terms of cumulative no.of standard axles to be carried during the design life of the road
is computed from the following formula.
n
N = 365 [ ( 1 + r ) - 1 ] x A x F x D
r
Where N = Cumulative number of standard axles to be catered for in the design in terms of msa
A = Initial traffic ( commercial vehicles per day ) in the year of completion of construction
D = Lane distribution factor
F = Vehicle damage factor ( number of standard axles per commercial vehicle )
n = Design life in years
r = Annual growth rate of commercial traffic
The traffic in the year of completion is estimated using the following formula.
x
A = P ( 1 + r )
Where P = Number of commercial vehicles per day at last count
x = Number of years between the last count and the year of completion of construction

From IRC 37-2018, page no. 67, Para II- " Positive stresses and strains are "tensile" whereas Negative stresses and
strains are " compressive". Only the absolute values without the (+) or (-) sign will be used in the performance models
given by equations 3.1 to 3.6"

From IRC 37-2018, Page no. 5 and 6: " For the calculation of vertical compressive strain on the top of the subgarde,
horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of the bottom bituminous layer and the horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of
cement treated base (CTB) layer, the analysis is done for a standard axle load of 80 kN ( Single axle with dual wheels).
Only one set of dual wheels, each wheel carrying 20 kN with the centre to centre spacing of 310 mm between the two
wheels, applied at the pavement surface shall be considered for the analysis.
From ANNEX-I Installation and use of IITPAVE Software, IRC 37-2108 Page No. 67, " For the results of pavement
analysis presented in the screen shot of the output page, the critical machanistic parameter, horizontal tensile strain
( ET), will be the largest of the tangential and radial strain at the bottom of the bituminous layer ( layer above the
interface beetween bituminous layer and granular layer ) computed at two radial distances of '0' and '155'.
