Open Hole Whipstock
Cement Type
The cement style whipstock system consists of a running tool, a concave with a
flow tube through the center and perforated tailpipe below the whipstock for
anchoring purposes. The whipstock is run in the hole and set on bottom, which
may consist of cement, fish or a bridge plug top. Once the whipstock is oriented
to the desired direction if required, cement can be pumped down through the
whipstock and out of the perforated tailpipe to a desired height above the
assembly. Set down weight is then applied to shear or separate the running tool
from the whipstock. Once the running tool is pulled above the cement top,
backwashing can now take place. Once the cement has hardened, a flexible BHA
consisting of a bit (usually a PDC or short tooth rotary bit), bit sub and one joint of
drill pipe can be run to drill the cement to the bottom of the concave. A drilling
BHA can then be run in to resume drilling operations.
Features
· Sizes available from 4-1/2-in. OD through 13-1/2-in. OD
· Improved design that allows for longer circulating times under higher
pressures
· Rotary shouldered connection for perforated tailpipe
Benefits
· Dependable and consistent exit versus standard open hole sidetrack attempts
· Can be supplied from over 300 locations worldwide

bores due to stuck fish
· Can be used where casing integrity is questionable; corrosion, perforations
etc.
· Can be installed in cement plugs where open hole sidetracks are in “tough to
drill” formations

Conventional Assembly
The Whipback whipstock is one of the most successful and recognized whipstocks
in the global re-entry market today. It has been the cornerstone of the Weatherford
casing exit product line since its introduction in the early 1990s. The unique
feature that put this system in the forefront of the industry, the patented
fulcrum/pivot design that locks the top of the whipstock against the casing wall.
This allows the Whipback whipstock to be set to exit the casing in any direction
regardless of well inclination. Weatherford's standard compliment of casing exit
mills (featuring crushed carbide or tungsten carbide inserts) are utilized with the
Whipback whipstock to obtain a full gauge window in as few as 2 milling trips.
Features
· Covers complete casing weight ranges from 4-1/2 in. OD through 13-3/8 in. OD
· Concave face angles from 1.12 to 3.88° for varied well profiles
· Ability to set direction independent of well azimuth or inclination
· Requires a false bottom to activate anchor (bridge plug, cement plug, liner top,
fish, etc.)
· Multiple methods of retrieval
Benefits
· Solid dependable tripping/setting action
· Ability to set independent of the bridge plug
· Reliable field proven technology with over 6,000 systems run on a global basis
· Can be supplied from over 300 locations worldwide
Applications
· Efficient and cost effective method of side tracking existing well bores
· Casing exit can be created independent of hole azimuth (high and low side
exits are possible)
· Casing exits through multiple strings of casing
· Flow by capabilities

PackWhip Casing Exit System
Hinge-Type Conventional Assembly
The packer type whipstock is anchored in the well bore through the use of a
permanent style big bore packer. A survey tool is run down hole to determine the
exact orientation of the packer. A mule shoe stinger assembly is made to the bottom
of the concave and adjusted to the direction required from the information provided
from the wire line survey. The whipstock and starting mill assembly can now be run in
the hole and latched into a matching profile inside the casing packer. Once the
assembly is anchored into the packer, the whipstock face will be oriented to the
desired direction automatically.
Features
· Large packer ID and accessories allows for lower zone production or isolation
· Packer anchor allows 360° rotation adjustable in 4° increments
· Can be wireline set or hydraulically activated on pipe
· Straight over-pull to release whipstock anchor from the packer
· Concave face angles from 1.12 to 3.88° for varied well profiles
Benefits
· Allows multiple sidetracks from one parent well bore location
· Provides complete zone isolation from below
· Allows re-entry access to the laterals for future remedial work
· Reliable, consistent field proven technology spanning 20 years of use
Applications
· Efficient and cost effective method of side tracking existing well bores
· Multilateral well projects
· Wells with high dogleg severity issues that require short, flexible whipstock
assemblies to pass through restrictive Ids
· Casing exits through multiple strings of casing

QuickCut Assembly
The packer type whipstock is anchored in the well bore through the use of a
permanent style big bore packer. A survey tool is run downhole to determine the
exact orientation of the packer. An orienting latch assembly is made up to the bottom
of the concave and adjusted to the direction required from the information provided
from the wireline survey. The whipstock and starting mill assembly can now be run in
the hole and latched into a matching profile inside the casing packer. Once the
assembly is latched into the packer, the whipstock face will be oriented to the desired
direction automatically.
Features
· Large packer ID and accessories allows for lower zone production or isolation
· Packer anchor allows 360º whipstock orientation adjustable in 4º increments
· Packer can be wireline set or hydraulically activated on pipe
· Straight over-pull to release the whipstock and latch assembly from the packer
· Unique lug technology protects the whipstock during cut out and accurately
directs the mill into the casing wall
· QuickCut™ milling assembly for improved penetration and gauge retention
Benefits
· Allows multiple sidetracks from one parent well bore location
· Provides complete zone isolation from below
· Allows re-entry access to the laterals for future remedial work
· Minimal rat hole for “tough to drill” formations
Applications
· Multilateral well projects

StarBurst Level 4 Multilateral
System
5 ½-in. System
Weatherford's StarBurst Level 4 multilateral system creates a Level 4* cemented
junction with full-liner access to the lateral bore. Overlapping concentric strings,
combined with the cement, ensure a junction with maximal support and formation
isolation.
With its unique hollow whipstock-anchor assembly, used in the milling, drilling, and
completion phases, the system requires only one whipstock run. After the window
is milled and the lateral is drilled, a conventional lateral liner assembly is run in the
lateral, cemented, and anchored back to the main bore above the window. A low-
side-oriented perforating technique is then used to perforate the liner and the
whipstock pressure plate to re-establish main-bore production. Production can be
commingled, or the new lateral can be kept separate by simply deferring the
whipstock perforation.
Applications
! The StarBurst system is a low-risk, economical
Level 4 multilateral solution that is effective in
new and re-entry applications. It is particularly
well suited for wells in mature fields where production rates are declining and
nearby additional reserves can be accessed with laterals while maintaining
production from the existing wellbore.
! With its practical, cost-reducing technology, which eliminates the need for
expensive assemblies, the StarBurst system is also ideal for new development
drilling.
