WHAT IS ASEAN?
The Philippines was one of the five founding members of ASEAN in 1967, and was also
one of the founders of the predecessor organization, ASA (the Association of Southeast
Asia) in 1961. The Philippines’ Relationship With ASEAN. ASEAN, (the Association
of SouthEast Asian Nations.), was founded in 1967 ‘’ to strengthen further the existing
bonds of regional solidarity and corporation.’’ As a result, the Philippine relationship and
interaction with ASEAN and its members is of key importance to the bloc .
ASEAN was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok by the five original member
countries; Indonesia, Malysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam
joined on 8 January 1984, Vietnam on28 July 1995, Laos and Myanmar on 23 July 1997
and Combodia on 30 April 1999. The Assiociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
is regional grouping that promotes economic, political, and security coorperation among
its ten members
Naging bahagi ng Asean ang Brunei noong 8 Enero 1984, ang araw pagkatapos ng
pagkamit ng kanilang kalayaan nang isang linggo. Ang Brunay ay unang bansa na
naging kasapi sa kalunan ng Asean. Noong 28 Hulyo 1995, nagkaroon ng isang bagong
kasapi ang Asean nang sumanib ang Vietnam bílang ikapitong kasapi. Pagkatapos ng
dalawang taon, sumanib ang mga bansang Laos at Myanmar bílang kasapi ng Asean
noong 23 Hulyo 1997. Kasabay dapat ang Cambodia sa araw ng pagsanib na iyon,
ngunit ipinagpaliban muna sapagkat lumalaganap pa ang kaguluhang panloob sa
politika. Noong 30 Abril 1999, sumanib na sa wakas ang bansang Cambodia at
nakabuo ng isang matatag na samahán ang Asean.
